The son of Arne Johnsen Paulsrud and Sigrid Reiersdatter Teige, Ole was born at the domicile Paulsrud. More specifically at Paulsrud nordre med nordre halvdel af Paulsrud mittre (Paulsrud North plus the North half of Paulsrud Middle). Like the majority of Norwegians at the time the family were all farmers.

At the age of 26 he left Norway arriving at New York on November 05, 1881, sailing in steerage class aboard the Elbe, a 440' single-screw ship that had been placed in service earlier that year. From New York, he traveled to Saint Paul, Minnesota becoming a shoemaker. It was in Saint Paul that he and Malena married about 1886.
