Olena Zalizniak

Olena "Olenka" Zalizniak was born on May 9, 1917 in Vienna. The metrical birth document issued by the Embassy of the Ukrainian National Republic shows that she was born as a citizen of Ukraine, and that was her most valuable document. Her childhood was spent in Helsinki, Finland, where her father was the Ambassador of the Ukrainian National Republic. In Mauer bei Wien, near Vienna, where her parents lived, she completed four grades of elementary school. When in 1927 the Zalizniak family moved to Lviv, she attende a private "Evangelical school with German as the language of instruction", because the Polish school authorities did not want to give the family permission to allow Olena to attend a Ukrainian high school, while attending a Polish high school was out of the question for the Zalizniak family. There Olena completed six years of high school. While attending this private school, Olena had to work for her school tuition by providing help to others, the weakerstudents, because her mother's income was not enough to paid the highcosts of the private school. Her seventh and eighth year of high school, Olena completed in Vienna, where she lived with her father (the Polish government did not give him a residence visa and he had to returnto Vienna in 1930). In 1935, Olenka entered the Academy of International Trade (Akakdenia Handlu Zagranicznego) in Lviv, and graduated in 1939 with a diploma (an equivalent of a Masters degree).

In 1938, after the annexation of Austria to Germany, she had to travel to Germany, in order to take part in a plebiscite on the Austrian annexation, and received a German passport, because Austrian passports became invalid.

In the years 1928, 1929 and 1930, she spent her summer vacations in the village of Oreltsi, with her aunt Macilynsky. Also, before the Poles prohibited the Ukrainian Plast, she was a Plast member (yunachka), and had spent her Plast camp at "Sokil", at Pidliuta on the Limnytsia River.

A few days before the outbreak of the Second World War, she moved with her mother and brother Julian to Vienna, where she got a job at the state government statistical department.

In Vienna, she married Ivan Bohdan Wesolowsky. About her later years until her emigration to Canada, to Montreal, and her life in Canada see Bohdan Wesolowsky's entry.

After the death of her husband in 1971, she continued to work as a librarian until she became a pensioner. She continued to live in Montreal. Olenka's health was not that good - it became difficult for her to drive her car as she used to do so frequently in the past.

Olena's true passion was ceramics. After becoming a pensioner, she began to paint and glaze plates, bowls and pitchers, most often done to the design of Hutsul motives, and also in the design of the ancient archeological finds from the Trypyllian age. She worked on her ceramics for her personal gratification, but also sold her works to supplement her pension.

Olena passed away on May 22, 2003 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Дружина Богдана Весоловського Олена була унікальною жінкою, яка завжди була його опорою і «бойовою». подругою. Вона була його Музою і співавтором, критиком і архіваріусом.

Народилася вона у Відні, але родина походила з села Завадова біля Стрия. Як і Богдан, Олена закінчила Вищу школу міжнародної торгівлі і здобула звання магістра економіки.

Однак все своє життя вона присвятила служінню родині. Вона була берегинею домашнього вогнища Весоловських. Разом з Богданом вони виховували двох синів - Остапа та Юрія, і трьох онуків - Петра, Адріяна та Христю.

Саме завдяки Олені Весоловській ми маємо змогу сьогодні ознайомитися з творами композитора, які вона, крупинку до крупинки, скрупульозно і педантично збирала. Вона створила кілька описів його творчості, середних - каталог пісень, у тому числі невиданих, опис фотографій. Вона записала на пл вку усі його озвучені твори . І хоча якість цього «повного зібрання на чотирьох касетах» можливо й не така, як хотілося б, але самеця збірка дає повну уяву про його орчість.

Олена Весоловська змогла зібрати майже всі публікації у пресі про свого чоловіка. Дружина композитора також була творчою людиною, вона прекрасно вишивала, а останні роки свого життя захоплювалася керамікою, якою прикрашала сімейний будинок.

Олена Весоловська мала ще одне незаперечне обдарування. Вона була прекрасною кухаркою. Після віденського й стрийського досвіду їй не було рівних у Монреалі. Її випічку замовляли далеко заздалепдь, а школи замовлення на весшля м1стило тридцять-сорок торпв. Її улюбленою піснею Бонді була «.Я знов тобі» у виконанні Ренати. На її думку, А. Дербіш, М. Вербицька і Рената були найкращими виконавцями його пісень.

А про твір «Усе моє життя» Олена Весоловська говорила, що <ще шеня про нас з Богданом». Усе життя вона тужила за рідним краєм, за Україною, і цю тугу вона намагалася виплеснути у словах танго «Лети, тужлива шсне». Ми всі повинні вклонитися пам'яті цієї жінки, яка до останньої хвилини працювала для того, щоб зберегти для нас велику постать композитора Богдана Весоловського.
