About Oliver Pickney Wingfield

Oliver Pickney Winfield was born in 1819 in Franklin, Virginia to William Pickney Wingfield, Jr. (1791-1890...served in War of 1812) and Mary 'Polly' Brooks Tench Wingfield (1798-1970). He had nine siblings: Parthenia Wingfield (1823-?), Dolly Wingfield (1825-?), William Henry Wingfield (1826-1907), Pickney Green Wingfield (1827-1908), Lewis Franklin Wingfield (1832-1907), Dorothea Wingfield (1835-?), Robert B. Wingfield (1838-?), George Washington Wingfield (1857-1941), and James Lewis Wingfield (1865-?).

He married Delila Smith on April 3, 1843 in Franklin, Virginia. To this union they had nine children: William L. Wingfield (1843-?), Francis 'Frank' Marion Wingfield (1846-1916), John A. Wingfield (1848-?), Nancy M. Wingfield Snyder (1849-1916), James F. Wingfield (1852-?), Verinda Melissa 'Sarah' Wingfield Townsend (1855-1898), Ann E. Wingfield (1857-?), Susan 'Lottie' Wingfield (1857-?), and Perry Wyatt Wingfield (1860-?).

Oliver Pickney Wingfield was a farmer and joined the Confederate States of America Army as a private on June 23, 1861 at age 42 at Camp Hicks, Virginia. He was an enlisted man in Company D, Virginia 58th Infantry Regiment according to the Virginia Regimental Histories Series. He died during the Battle of Good's Farm on June 6, 1862.

The Battle of Good's Farm was a short skirmish between the Confederates and the Union in Jackson's Valley Campaign during the American Civil War. As Stonewall Jackson's Army withdrew from the pressure of Major General John C. Fremont's forces, moving from Harrisonburg toward Port Republic, Colonel Turner Ashby commanded the rear guard. The rear guard included the 44th Virginia Infantry, the 58th Virginia Infantry, 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA, and one lLouisiana infantry regiment. On june 6, 1862, near Harrisonburg, the 1st New Jersey Cavalry attacked Ashby's position at Good's Farm. Although Ashby defeated the cavalry attack, a subsequent infantry engagement resulted to his horse being short and Ashby charging ahead on foot. Within a few steps, he was shot through the heart, killing him instantly.
