Olybrius, Western Roman Emperor

He was a Roman noble, and a member of the powerful gens Anicia, but his parentage is uncertain.

One theory is that he was related to the Consul Anicius Hermogenianus Olybrius, whose wife and cousin, Anicia Juliana, had the same name Olybrius gave to his own daughter. However, Juliana was a common name name among the Anicii, and Hermogenianus seems to have had only one daughter, who took chastity vows.

Other theories make him a son of Flavius Anicius Probus or, less probably, Petronius Maximus.

Rome was originally the capital of the Roman emperor. Later, it moved to Milan, and then Ravenna (A.D. 402-476). After the fall of Romulus Augustulus, in A.D. 476, Rome continued to have an emperor for almost another millennium, but that Roman emperor ruled from the East.
