This photo is the original of the cropped images seen most places for Charles Renatus Hicks, I extracted it from the profile image on FamilySearch for a profile named Nan-ye-hi Elizabeth Corntassel.

How many wives did CRH have?

1. Family Search says Nan-ye-hi Elizabeth Corntassel only
2. WikiTree says Nan-Ye-Hi (Broom) Hicks only
3. James Hicks says “ He married (2) NANCY E BROOM Abt. 1797, daughter of CHIEF BROOM and A-TSO-S-TA” but does not Shaw a married (1) but below suggests he had two children by someone other than Nancy
4. GENI shows three wives… Husband of Lydia "Chow-Uh-Kah" Halfbreed; Nancy “Anna Felicitas” Hicks (Broom) and NN ‘Sister of Gahno’ NN

Replies…
Charles had only one known wife (Nancy the daughter of Chief Broom) but also had children with someone (unknown) else.

Starr confused Charles' mother with his wife. Charles died before photography was invented.

Lydia Halfbreed is incorrectly listed with Charles as the father of George Hicks; the Moravians make it clear that the father was Charles' brother William.

And there's no such person as "Nan-ye-hi Elizabeth Corntassel." There was a woman named "Nancy Corntassel" who was the wife of Rufus Hicks. They both died in the 1860's so aren't the couple in the photo either. I haven't seen any photos of Cherokee people that were taken in the Cherokee Nation until the 1870's.“
(Curator note: the camera was invented in 1816, the first image produced in 1826, the first commercial camera was sold in 1839, so it is highly unlikely that this is a photo of Charles Renatus Hicks!)
