About Orestes Badger
Orestes Badger of Otsego, NY was a machinist who invented, among other things, a double hydrostatic oil press, for which he and Orrin Lull received U.S. Patent #40 on October 5, 1836. He also was the owner of US Patent No. 55, for an improvement in endless chain incline plane horse power.
From "The Boston Advertiser," Oct 15 1850: "Orestes Badger, Esq., aged 58 years, committed suicide on the night of the 3d inst. at Otsego, by severing the femoral artery with a knife which he had sharpened during the day. Mr. B. had suffered from disease for many years, causing severe pain and producing great depression of spirits, which he had hopped to relieve by a too free use of morphine, and this induced mental aberration, under which he committed suicide, He was a man of ability, and of high standing and influence. -{N.Y. Courier."
