Was a granite monument manufacturer in Montpelier VT c1890 and later in
Valhalla, Westchester Co., NY. Died of carcinoma of bladder at White

Plains Hosp. Moved to Valhalla NY before 1906. Buried at Kensico

Cemetery, Mar. 19, 1926.

Vt. Historical Society info.--1895 census of Montpelier/Berlin showed him
living at 5 Taplin Street with wife Laura and children Laura, Alice M.,

Blanche D., Laurens E., and Ruth. Census of 1899 did not show him listed

in Montpelier or Berlin. His brother S.I. (Sylvanus I.) Staples owned

Pioneer Granite Co. on Barre St., Montpelier later renamed Excelsior

Granite Co. in 1891. S.I. Staples not found in Montpelier census of

1899 either. Andrew Staples who remained in Montpelier was son of

Wilford and Urbana Roberts Staples, born Stockton, ME. Andrew and his

son, Donald, both buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Montpelier.

10/29/91--Andrew Black Staples was Orpheus & Sylvanus' first cousin
(Orpheus' mother Daphne Roberts and Andrew's mother Urbana Roberts were

sisters). Also, Andrew's father Wilbert was son of Mathew R. Staples, the

son of James Staples and his first wife. Orpheus' father Franklin was

also son of James but of his 2nd wife (thus Orpheus and Andrew Staples

were both first cousins on their mother's side and half-cousins--that is,

sons of half-brothers on their fathers' side. 10/15/92. According to a

Mrs. Donnelley at Kensico Cem. Office, Orpheus owned his own monument

works in Valhalla and lived in a very nice house on Waller Ave. in

Valhalla. His company has been sold twice since then, now owned by an

Italian family. 10/25/92. Visited Kensico Cemetery. Found graves of

Orpheus & Laura, their son Lesley and grandson Orpheus III, also an

infant b. & d. in 1908. Visited Presbury Leland Monument Co. and talked

to Mr. Sorrentino there who gave me the name of a friend who gave me the

addresses and tel. nos. of Bob and Halsey Staples of Greenport NY.

10/26/92. Called Halsey Staples. He is my father's 1st cousin and a son

of Laura's younger brother Stuart. He promised to send Xeroxes of

photos & photocopy of family history. He also gave me name of Aunt

Esther Staples Reynolds my grandmother's younger sister living in Lake

Waccabuc NY 10/31/92. Visited Aunt Esther. She loaned me 3 pictures to

have copied 2 family group pictures of the Staples and one sepia

portrait of Laura Gave me quite a bit of info. on the family. Will ask

about grandparents next time if possible.
