About Otto III Carinthia, Count of Gorizia, Tyrol, Duke of Carinthia and Carniever

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_III._%28K%C3%A4rnten%29

Otto III (c. 1265 † 25 May 1310) was Count of Gorizia and Tyrol and As Otto III Duke of Carinthia and Carniever (1295–1310).

Origin- Otto was the son of Duke Meinhard II and Elisabeth of Bavaria. He succeeded his father in his offices after his death in 1295, together with his brothers Albert, Ludwig and Heinrich.

Rule-Otto took over a well-organized sovereignty; his father had laid the foundation for an efficient administration with the promotion of the ministerials and the creation of the Tyrolean Raitbücher. Otto first agreed with the Bishop of Brixen on the border of the territories of Tyrol and the diocese, which was henceforth established at the mouth of the Avisio into the Adige, north of Trento. Otto's brothers became bailiffs of the bishops of Trent. Although Otto obtained some Tyrolean customs rights through King Albrecht I, Otto's lavish court put a heavy strain on the budget. Under Otto's measures of domination, the expansion and fortification of the gries market (1305) against the still episcopalally dominated central town of Bolzano stand out.

Seal Duke Otto's seal shows a rider blowing to the right with an inlaid lance (with the right-looking Tyrolean eagle on a racing flag) and the shield (divided, Carinthian coat of arms, three armed lions on top of each other on the right, a bar on the left); the two-line transcription between stableists reads: OTTO DEI GRACIA DUX KARINTHIE TIROLIS ET GORICIE COMES AQUILEGENSIS / TRIDENTINE BRISINENSIS ECLESIARU(m) ADUOCATUS; the letters have uncial shapes.

Family In 1297 Otto married Duchess Euphemia (1281–1347), daughter of Duke Henry V of Silesia. With her he had four daughters: Anna, * 1300, who married Count Palatine Rudolf II; Elizabeth, later wife of King Peter II of Sicily; Ursula and Euphemia. Since Otto died without sons, his younger brother Henry of Carinthia succeeded him in 1310; the brothers Albert and Louis had already died in 1292 and 1305 respectively.

Otto III.

Familie [Bearbeiten]

1297 heiratete Otto Herzogin Euphemia (1281–1347)[1], Tochter Herzogs Heinrichs V. von Schlesien[2]. Mit ihr hatte er vier Töchter:

   * Anna, * 1300, die den Pfalzgrafen Rudolf II. heiratete;

* Elisabeth, später Ehefrau von König Peter II. von Sizilien;
* Ursula und
* Euphemia.
1305 verstorben.
