Owen Robert Spooner

Owen Spooner of Kingsley, IA died peacefully at home on June 7th, 2016 at the age of 75. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 11th at St. Michaels Church in Kingsley with Fr. Brad Pelzel officiating. Burial will be at St. Michaels Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion, Nash Post 140, Kingsley. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm on Friday, June 10th at St. Michael's Church with a rosary by the Knights of Columbus at 5pm, with family present from 5 to 7pm and a prayer service at 7pm. Condolences can be sent to rohdefh.com. Owen was born on July 19, 1940, to Burle and Lucille Spooner in Pisgah, IA. He graduated from Pisgah high school in 1958. He worked in the family business, Spooner Hardware and Implements, until 1963 when he joined the US Navy and served until 1967. He served as a third class petty officer in the US Navy as an electronics specialist on a communications ship, USS Valcour, in the Middle East during the Vietnam War. He left his studies at Iowa State University to help run the family John Deere Implement in Pierson, IA. On December 27th 1975, he married Jolene Hebert of Bonesteel, South Dakota at St. Michael's Church Kingsley, IA. Together they raised a son, Shawn. Owen was a generous, witty and loyal husband and father. He loved golfing with friends, fishing and playing cribbage with his son, and cheering for the Packers and for anyone who was playing against Nebraska. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. His leisure was spent listening to jazz, classical and instrumental ensemble music, reading Sherlock Holms, and watching John Wayne. He was always known to have a funny quote or phrase to address any situation, and was an avid fan of Ogden Nash poetry. He was a member of the American Legion post 140. He was an active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, where he served as former Grand Knight, District Deputy, and promotion of life initiative of the state family. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and many friends. Owen is survived by his wife Jolene of 40 years; his son Shawn (Heather) Spooner and grand-daughter Nora and two grandsons Kellen and Brogan of Grimes, IA, sister Elinor Schendt of Fremont, NE and brother Pat (Susan) Spooner of Spirit Lake, IA; his mother-in-law, Lillian Hebert of Butte, NE; He is also survived by brother-in-law Gus Polito of Omaha, NE, brother-in-law Steve (Anne) Hebert of Denver, CO, sister-in-laws Sharon (Don) Lagana of Bonita Springs, FL, and Jan (Tom) Hausman of Yankton, SD, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Burle and Lucille Spooner, his brother Warren Spooner and his wife Alfreda, his sister Annetta Polito and sister Joanne in infancy, his brother-in-law Robert Schendt, and father-in-law Raymond Hebert.
