About Owen Williams

Owen Williams was born on October 20, 1744 in Fairfax County, Virginia, now Louden as of 1757.[1] The land that the Williams family farmed was included in Loudoun County when it was formed in 1757; thus many genealogies state Loudoun Co. was his birthplace. Owen was the third son of William Williams, Sr., and his wife Margaret (Evans) Williams. [2]

Some genealogies state that the first two children: Priscilla and Isaac Williams must have been from a different mother than Margaret Evans (aka Margaret McGrew) because there is a "marriage" record in the Chester Quaker MM minutes dated September 11, 1743, between William Williams and Margaret Evans. However, other research reveals that Margaret Evans was not a Quaker when she and William Williams met and that they were married June 16, 1740, at Christ Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is believed that she subsequently joined the Society of Friends and that they were "recognized" in a Quaker ceremony in Sept. 1743, after their first two children were born, making all of them full brothers and sisters. Only DNA testing of descendants can prove or disprove this hypothesis.

Shortly after this event, the Williams family left Pennsylvania for Fairfax County, Virginia, then a frontier community accepting new Quaker immigrants.

Owen Williams grew up in Fairfax, then Loudoun County, Virginia. In about 1761 when he was 16 years old, he and his family moved to Cane Creek, Snow Camp, Orange (in 1771 it became Chatham Co., in 1824, Alamance Co.) County, North Carolina, where the family were a part of the Cane Creek Monthly (Quaker) Meeting.

Marriage
Owen married three times:
1. On March 15, 1770, at Cane Creek MM, Owen Williams married Cathron (Crawford) Williams, also a Quaker. They had 6 children together:[3]

Mary Williams, b. 4 Jan 1770, in Cane Creek, Chatham, NC[4]
John Williams, b: 25 Mar 1772 in Cane Creek, Chatham Co., NC
William Williams b: 27 Aug 1777 in Chatham Co., NC
Enoch Williams b: 26 June 1778 in Chatham Co., NC
John Williams b: 11 Nov 1778 in Cane Creek, Chatham, NC[5]
Isaac Williams b: 27 Sep 1784 in Chatham, North Carolina
Cathron (Crawford) Williams died at the Williams' home in Cane Creek, Chatham Co., NC, on January 28, 1786. She is buried at Rocky River, NC.[6]

2. In March 1792, after having moved two times: first to Pasquotank MM, NC (1786) and then (1791) to Guilford County (Deep River MM) NC, Owen Williams remarried, this time to Abigail Davis, b. 1751 at Cane Creek, NC. Abigail was the widow of another Quaker, Abraham Ozbun. Unfortunately, she died in 1798 with no living children recorded.

3. Owen Williams married a third time on November 6, 1799 in Deep River MM, Guilford, NC, to Sarah Willits, b: May 18, 1769 in Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. Owen and Sarah (Willits) Williams had three children together:[7]

Margaret Williams b: 4 Mar 1801 in Deep River, Guilford, North Carolina, United States.
Elizabeth WILLIAMS b: 25 NOV 1802 in ,Deep River, Guilford Co.,NC
Jesse Williams b: 20 Oct 1804 in Deep River, Guilford, North Carolina, United States.
Death
Owen Williams died on April 30, 1810, at his home in Guilford County, North Carolina. His widow, Sarah (Willits) Williams survived him and moved back to her family home in Stokes County, NC. She died there in 1853. No cemetery location for either Owen or Sarah has been found.[8]

↑ Note by Chet Snow: Some older genealogies give Feb. 20, 1744, as his birth date but the most recent (1963) research indicates he was born in the "8th month" or October, according to old Quaker dating. See: Ben F. and Alice L. Dixon, Captain Isaac Williams and His Grandchildren, pg 7.

↑ Hollingsworth-Robbins Family Tree - Owen Williams Note: this genealogy ascribes 4 more children to Owen & Katherine but the dates do not match.
↑ The year may be 1771 as both Owen & Katherine were devout Quakers, making having a daughter 3 months before they wed very unlikely whereas Jan. 1771 would be 9 months after their wedding.
↑ May be 11 Nov. 1779 as June to November is short between births.
