- Of ancient Welsh stock, Owen ap Hugh lived not far from Newborough. In the year of his return as its second Member, he and his uncle Lewis ab Owen ap Meurig appeared as defendants before the general surveyors to answer charges brought by John ap Robert Lloyd and another inhabitant of Newborough. Ap Hugh held property at Porthamel where the knight for Anglesey in 1545, William Bulkeley I, had a house, and if already married for a second time when returned he was also a kinsman of Bulkeley. He did not sit again, although he remained active in the administration of the island, serving twice as sheriff and sitting on the bench for over 40 years. He engaged in a lifelong dispute with his neighbours the Meyricks of Bodorgan which came into the Star Chamber towards the end of Elizabeth’s reign. He is said to have died in 1613. His son Hugh Owen married a Pembrokeshire heiress and founded the fortunes of the family in that shire.3
