Sir Hugh Owen of Bodowen & Orielton
- (d 1613, recorder of Carmathen)
- Sir Hugh Owen was the son of Owen ap Hugh and Isabel Griffith.1 He married Elizabeth Werriott.1 He died in 1613.1
From Welsh Biography Online (http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-OWEN-BOD-1545.html) :
"OWEN AP HUGH of Bodeon was quite a prominent man in Anglesey in the early age of Elizabeth, sheriff twice, and Member of Parliament in 1545 for Newborough (according to the old order). His son, the first Sir HUGH OWEN, was a man of law, and recorder of the town of Carmarthen; this position enabled him to win the hand of Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of George Wirriott of Orielton in Pembroke (see Owen of Orielton ). When the Civil War broke out the attitude of the family, both in Anglesey and Pembroke, was indeterminate and non-committal; he would be a clever man who could say whether the second Sir Hugh favoured the king or the Parliament, so taciturn was he, and so close he kept his secrets."

Sir Hugh Owen by his wife Elizabeth Wirriott had issue two sons and five daughters.
- l. John, the eldest son, married Dorothy, or Dorothea, a daughter of Rowland' Laugharne, of St. Bride's, in the county of Pembroke, by Lettice his wife, who was a daughter of Sir John Perrott, Knight, of Haroldston, Lord Deputy of Ireland, one of the most illustrious men that Pembrokeshire ever produced. John Owen died in his father's lifetime, leaving issue, of whom again.
- II. William Owen, Esq. Upon this, his second son, Sir Hugh settled the Anglesey estates of Bodowen or Bodeon. m. Jane Williams (dau of Sir William Williams of Vaynol)
- III. Sibyl, the eldest daughter of Sir Hugh, was married to Sir John Wogan, of Wiston, knight. In the MS. pedigree this is said to have been Sir William Wogan. But in the inquisition taken after Bundle 49, Inquisitiones Post Mortem, Temp. Car. I. No. 38, at the Public Record Office. the death of Sir Hugh Owen, his name is put down as Sir John Wogan.
- IV. Anne, the second daughter, married Lewis of Presaddfed, in Bodedern, co. Anglesey, whilom the residence and estate of Hwfa ap Cynthelw. There was a John Lewis, High Sheriff of Anglesey in 1618, and probably it was he that married Anne Owen.
- V. Jane, third daughter, married twice-firstly, Lloyd of Carmarthen; and secondly, Griffith of Penrhyn, co. Carnarvon.
- VI. Janet, or (as she is called in the inquisition hereinafter alluded to) Jennette, the fourth daughter of Sir Hugh, married John Laugharne, of St. Bride's, co. Pemb. This John Laugharne lived in the time of the Great Civil War between the Parliament and Charles I. From the first outbreak of the war he sided strongly with the Parliament, and it was his influence chiefly that made Pembroke so celebrated a stronghold for the Parliament cause. When the Earl of Carberry, the King's Lieutenant-General in West South Wales, placed garrisons in the principal strongholds in Pembrokeshire, John Laugharne "left his country habitation, and, with his whole family, a few servants excepted, betook himself to the town of Pembroke,” where his son, the afterwards celebrated Major-General Rowland Laugharne, and the Mayor of Pembroke, the afterwards celebrated Col. John Poyer, were at the head of a small body of Parliamentary adherents.
- VII. Frances, the fifth daughter of Sir Hugh Owen, married Morris Wogan, of Wiston, co. Pemb. 1
Sir Hugh Owen married, secondly, Lucy, daughter of Henry, ninth Earl of Northumberland, by Catherine, daughter and co-heiress of John Nevill, Lord Latimer. She was the widow of Sir James Wootton, Knight;
The issue of which second marriage was two sons:
- l. Richard Owen.
- II. Percy Owen.
Sir Hugh died in or about the year 1614, and was buried at Monkton Church, as the inquisition into his estates after his death was made in the year 1615 (12th James I.). The inquisition was taken at the Castle of Haverfordwest, on the 3rd April, before Thomas Mathias, gentleman, escheator appointed by Commission.
? Her monument is at Boulston Church. The inscription is given in Fenton's “Pembrokeshire.”
