About P. Paul Ewald

from his granddaughter-in-law,Kitty Munson Cooper:

He was always known as Paul and his first great-grandchild Paul Munson Bethe was named for him.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Peter_Ewald for information about his career as a physicist. He "was a German-born U.S. crystallographer and physicist, a pioneer of X-ray diffraction methods."

In his later years, when he retired, he lived in Ithaca, NY within a short walk from his daughter Rose Ewald Bethe. He drew up the family tree of Ewalds and Phillippsons, which is replicated here, for his grandchildren. His wife was a distant cousin of his. His more famous son-in-law was briefly a student of his back in Germany when daughter Rose was 12.

He enjoyed long walks (short hikes) on nature trails of which there are many in Ithaca. He had a delightful sense of humor and was much loved by his family

excerpt from a biographical account of Ludwig Hopf at https://ulir.ul.ie/bitstream/handle/10344/4716/Holfter_2015_Hopf.pd... "Hopf and fellow Sommerfeld student Paul Peter Ewald (who, like Hopf, called one of his sons ‘Arnold’ in later years) presented an artistic version of the theory, with Hopf (of small stature and rather portly) as the stationary electron and Ewald (long and thin) as the moving electron – and the sketch was delivered, as Sommerfeld recalls in his obituary of Hopf, in excellent verses. Peter Debye, a talented Dutch physicist who had already been Sommerfeld’s assistant in Aachen and moved with him to Munich, recalled that Ewald, Hopf and himself were prime movers in setting up the famous ‘Sommerfeld seminars’ – crucially excluding Sommerfeld so that “stupid” questions by younger students could be aired."
