About PFC Chester I. Sanders

Chester I. Sanders served as a Private in the 12th Chemical Maintenance Company, United States Army during World War II.

He was a son of Harry David Sanders and Anna Elizabeth (Eck) Sanders.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 2, 1942 at New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

He received his discharge from the Army on October 10, 1945 at Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.

He was originally from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on January 16, 1965.

C.I. SANDERS, WORLD WAR II VETERAN, DIES

Chester I. (Bill) Sanders, 53, of 232 West Middle Street, died Wednesday morning at the Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg where he had been a patient since December 21.

A native of Silver Spring, Md., he was a son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Eck) Sanders.

Surviving are his widow, the former Anna Zurgable, and two children, Gerard and Theresa Ann, both at home; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Hull, Hanover R.D.; Mrs. Ray Felix, Gettysburg; and Mrs. Walter Harbaugh, York, and a stepsister, Mrs. Joseph Hemler, Gettysburg.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and was a foreman for Angel Cement Construction Co., Gettysburg. Before that he was an employee of Leo McDermitt for many years.

A World War II veteran of Army service, spending 31 months overseas, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a private first class in the 12th Chemical Maintenance Company, entering service March 2, 1942, and being discharged October 10, 1945. He served in the European Theater and saw action in the Tunisia, Sicily, Rome, Naples, Foggia, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning with a meeting at the Peters Funeral Home at 8:30 o'clock and a Requiem Mass at 9 o'clock in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Kealy officiating. Interment will be made in the National Cemetery here. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock and the Rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m.
