Veteran - He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 1286th Combat Engineers in Germany.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4989 and American Legion Post 0155.

William M. "Bill" Niswander, 87, of Monterey, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 at his home.

He was born March 14, 1922 on a farm near Herndon, a son of Paul C. and Helen Viola Smith Niswander.

He graduated from Washington- Lee High School in Arlington.

Mr. Niswander was an active member of Monterey United Methodist Church for many years.
He drove the ambulance for Highland County Rescue Squad for 20 years. He served on the Monterey Town Council from 1982 until 2009.

He had driven for Super Concrete Company in Washington, D.C., and was a construction inspector in Fairfax County for 25 years.

He retired from Fairfax County Department of Environmental Management and moved with Leta Cayton to Monterey in 1981.

After retirement, he had worked for Houston Smith from 1981 until 1989.

He loved to drive and traveled extensively in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He was an expert
fisherman, fishing in the Chesapeake Bay in summer and with his son in the Florida Keys in winter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Quarles, and his second wife, Leta Cayton.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia Sites Marshall Niswander; his first wife and mother of his children, Irene Young Miller; a daughter, Sherry; a son; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Lee and her husband Bill of Great Falls; two nieces and a nephew.
