About Pan
In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan is the God of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs.
If you should meet him in the woods, or wake him up from his nap, he may strike as scary, given that he's has the hindquarters, legs (hooves), and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. But, of course, he's got the flute.
So, basically, Pan is a mellow fellow, but when accidentally awakened from his noontime nap he could give a great shout that would cause flocks to stampede. From this aspect of Pan's nature Greek authors derived the word panikon, “sudden fear,” the ultimate source of the English word: panic.
But, in the case of panic, consult The Hitchiker's Giude to the Galaxy, grab your towel, and don't panic.
