Ex-Dane County Official Paul Helgesen, Father of LUtheran Ministers, Dies
Paul Helgesen, 72, of 4809 Winnequah rd., Monona Village, a retired farmer and father of three Lutheran ministers, died Sunday in a Madison hospital.
Born in 1890 in the town of Moscow, Green county, he married Helga Kittleson in 1913. He farmed in Mt. Horeb vicinity from 1914 to 1946, and then near Cottage Grove from 1946 to 1958 when he moved into Madison.
He was a former member of the Blue Mounds Lutheran Church and the First Lutheran at Stoughton. He was presently a memeber of Lake Edge Lutheran Church here.
Mr. Helgesen was a delegate to the recent convention which resulted in the merger of three Lutheran Chruch bodies into the American Lutheran Church. He was a member of the World Missions Commitee of the American Lutheran Church, southern Wisconsin district.
He served on the Dane county school committee, of which he was an original mmeber, for several years.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Philip Weigand, Fargo, N.D., and Mrs. Donald Paulson, Ripon; four sons, Phillip, Cobb, superintendent of the high school there, and the Rev. K.J. Helgeson, Sioux Falls, S. D.; and the Revs. G. S. and R. B. Helgesen, both of Minneapolis; and 23 grancdhildren.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Gunderson funeral home, 5203 Monona dr.
The family suggested that memorials may be made to the Lake Edge Lutheran Church building fund.
Funeral rites will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Lake Edge Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hector Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery.
