Paul Libera and his wife Antonia were two members of the first wave of Kashubian Polish settlers to reach the vicinity of Winona, Minnesota in the middle and late 1850s. In the early 1860s, the Liberas relocated to a farm across the Mississippi River in Pine Creek, Wisconsin. After moving to Pine Creek, the Liberas donated to the local Catholic community a ten acre parcel of land now occupied by Saint Wenceslaus-Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart Cemetery.
PAUL LIBERA DIES NEW YEAR'S DAY
Aged Pioneer Passes Away at Age of Eighty-One Years.
Paul Libera one of the pioneer residents of Winona and well known in his city died on New Year's morning at 9:15 o'clock at his home 617 Second street east. The deceased lived to the ripe old age of 81 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Mr. Libera came to Winona from Poland, arriving here in 1859. He lived here for a number of years and then went farming across the river in Wisconsin for several years retiring twenty years ago and residing in the east end since.
The deceased is survived by his wife and nine children. The four sons are Albert and Michael of Winona, Momert of Seattle, Washington, and Joseph of Milwaukee, Wis. Te daughters are Mrs. John Platha of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. John Literski of Winona, Mrs. John Drazowski of South Bend, Indiana, Mrs. William Gage of Birmingham, New York and Sister Appoloniyra of the St. Francis Order f Milwaukee who is now teaching at St. Peter, Minn.
The funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock from the St. Stanislaus church, Rev. Father Pachowski officiating. Interment will be made at St. Mary's cemetery.
