Peder Jonsson Gyllensvärd- Roy Lantz

It is not without a certain pride that I write this article, but at the same time a sad reminder of the suffering that followed in the wake of the war among the common people and to the soldiers' bereaved relatives. The article is about a young man who, during the war years of the 17th century, works his way up through the ranks, by distinguishing himself on the German battlefields, that in Nuremberg he received probably one of the highest awards a man in the 17th century could receive and the dream of many soldiers , to be knighted. Gustav II Adolfs Field Camp in Nürnberg Family and Village 11:2 Peder Jonsson Gyllensvärd - Roy Lantz After researching for a long time about my ancestor Per Jonsson, it was literally like Christmas Eve when I received the above copy of an original Shield Letter (letter of nobility) in my hand. The place where it took place was in Gustav II Adolf's field camp at Nuremberg August 12 The incident took place only a week or so before the Swedish army suffered the devastating setback, the storming of Alte Feste where a large number of soldiers and officers were wounded or captured, including Per Jonsson's brother-in-law and Gustav II Adolf's cousin Colonel Erik Hand, who died on August 30 from the injuries he sustained in the collision. It is likely that Per Jonsson had distinguished himself above the ordinary and that is why he was dubbed a Knight by Gustav II Adolf in front of courtiers, officers, jacks and their family members. (Per Jonsson was introduced at the knight's house in 1638 as noble no. 240 and took the noble name Gyllensvärd). As the text in the Shield Letter is a little difficult to read, I have, as usual, made use of my co-researcher Jan Jakobsson's extraordinary interpretation. As will be seen from the letter below which was written on September 10, 1634, no shield letter was made until September 1634 and the reason for that was that Gustav II Adolf fell a few weeks later on November 6 in the battle of Lützen. The first part of the letter below reflects what is written in the original letter above and the end of the letter was composed by Axel Oxenstierna, who clarifies why no letter was written Here follows Jan's interpretation of the letter from 1634 in its entirety: Shield letter for Ryttmästaren Peder Jonsson Vi Gustaf Adolhp. Do hereby, with witterligity and knowledge, that from now on Correspondence our Faithful servant and Horsemaster Manhaftigh Peder Jonsson, have allowed themselves to be used in our and Cronan's service, all to the end that he received ours and that of the Fatherland's prosperity, and had to increase and improve his position. Wherefore and on the fact that this his well-intended Intention, may land him in good faith, we have so to his Contentment that, in order to notice through it several to virtue and manhood, wanted to improve his conditions and apartment, with noble standing and ski shield mark, and in this our letter by the power of the King's power and authority to grant, grant and honor him and all his descendants Ektha Bröstarfvingar, postscript shield marquee, Nembl: a green skield, within it a bared gilt sword, and above that a open helmet, and on the helmet a gilded sword, between two hunter's horns, according to what is painted here. Which badge he and all his posterity Breastwings, Male and Quinque, shall have power to bear and use in all chivalrous and noble Conversations, such as in the field and slaughters, storming, skirmishes, jousting, ring-running, de-painting, inpegall, so and all other Occasions , Noble associations in common and all, as well as enjoy and use all the Privileges, Freedoms and rights that the Knighthood and the Nobility enjoy in common, and from now on be able to be endowed as well on the estates and farms he and his wife have acquired, or elliest to inheritance can fall, as and what he can lawfully procure for himself and add salvation has been, to eternal times. For this reason, we request kindly and lovingly so and respectively favorably and graciously, of all and wherever and one in particular, that ben:te Peder Jonsson happens to appear, to then recognize him and his Eechta children and Bröstarfvingar as true noblemen, proving to them the honor and respect, which that status entails. As we and hereby bind, all who are bound by obedience to us are to do or add to the son Peder Jonsson or his Descendants here against obstacles or whatever, now or in future times, given and written in our field camp at Nürnberg, August 12 on the oh Her Royal Highness our Most Gracious Queen and Crown Princess, and the respective Guardians and Government of the Kingdom of Sweden Giöre Vitterligit, that all the time RIKS Cantslären, wellb; Mr. Axel Oxenstierna, by his own hand, has testified how His Excellency SKM has graciously told and promised the above-mentioned Peder Jonsson this open letter and ski shield badge, and it was ordered in Cantzlijt to be prepared, and presented for signing; People for HKM's untimely and unexpected demise became retroactive. Therefore and on the same Royal grace in all these smaller things may be completed, and can enjoy his long faithful service to the credit, then we have, on behalf of HRHM's most gracious Queen, so and by the power and authority all the Kingdom's estates on the penultimate and benevolent Riksdag have given us, according to manner, as in this Form, as well as his aeekt Breast Wings, true Royal Letters and Skiöldmarke hereby wanted to Confirm and Ratify, exactly as stated above. Furthermore. Signature with the councillors' initials. Who was this Per Jonsson and the letters from Birgeri Rothovius? The first time I came across Per Jonsson was in two letters written in 1616 from the Provost later Bishop Jonas Birgeri Rothovius in Angelstad in Småland to Axel Oxenstierna. A letter from April 24 when he informed Axel Oxenstierna about different conditions in the village and then tells about his county neighbor Pär Jonsson from Bohult. The second letter dated 10 May of the same year, he takes on the task of trying to get compensation for the humiliation Per Jonsson's wife Elisabeth Hand had to endure during the time she was courting Duke Johan of Östergötland. He thinks it would be appropriate for Elisabeth and her husband to share in the inheritance of Duke Johan, who recently passed away. He also expresses his wish that Per Jonsson; my friend that at HKM would get a better service, because he is a nice fellow and will surely in time make up his own mind. It also appears from the letter that at the time he was ensign over Västbo jacks. Per Jonsson's marriage to Elisabeth Hand Per and Elisabeth had married on April 10, 1616. The year looked bad, but based on the above letter and the childbirth, it should be I wrote about Elisabeth's fathers in Born 19 July 1712 in Småland and I don't know much about Pers! The children did not let them wait, because on 13 May 1617 the son Johan was born and then came Knut, Virginia and in 1620 Märta. Probable birth for my cousin Beata was Donationer in Västervik, Femsjö and freedom from taxation on Önnarp In a letter from 7 October 1620, it appears that Per Jonsson had advanced to lieutenant and that he receives a farm in Västervik as a donation, he receives Sätesgården Yaböke and the croft Gullnubb in Femsjö parish as a donation (Sätesgården Yaböke which would later be taken over of granddaughter Maria Catharina Svinhufvud and Johan Carl Rosenschantz). Per has further risen in the ranks, now he was captain. On March 3, 1629, in a letter from Gustav II Adolf, he receives tax exemption on a tax home in Önnarp, as well as on his own tax farm in Hössna in Västergötland, as well as on four farms, Hallen, Hästhagen and Höghult in Hössna debt and Tuskan in Liared parish in Redväg district in Västergötland. According to a source, Per had purchased Hössnagården a few years earlier. Another source claims that it came via the marriage with Elisabeth, which I think is most likely. Per was now elevated to Ryttmäster. The Thirty Years' War and relocation to Germany Per Jonsson, who came to spend a large part of his adult life on the various battlefields, belonged to the Småland cavalry. The regiment consisted of 8 companies and about 1100 soldiers. Colonel Per Brahe (later Riksdrots) was a regiment commander in the early 1630s. On September 18, 1631, Per Brahe assembled the regiment in a field outside Würzburg. There left On September 18, 1631.

13 he regiment to Colonel Fredrik Stenbock (older brother of Gustav Otto who later became governor-general of Scania among others). The regiment was one of the units that accompanied Gustav II Adolf in his successful battles and conquests in Germany. In the military rolls, it can be deduced that Per Jonsson certainly took part in all the battles and raids we read about in school. From the rolls, it is also possible to learn what fate befell the common soldiers, including those who mustered on June 17, 1630 in Kalmar before being shipped over to Germany. Of the 92 commoners in Per Jonsson's company, 52 were either injured, dead or fell victim to some disease four months after the muster in Kalmar. Most met their fate in Stettin during October-November 1630. On July 26, 1632, the regiment was in field camp at Ravensberg. The next stop was Nürnberg, as shown in the shield letter. After he was ennobled in Nuremberg, the next major battles were the Battle of Alte Feste and then the Battle of Lützen, where, as is well known, Gustav II Adolf breathed his last on November 6. The Småland horsemen had been central figures in the battle and suffered great losses in dead and wounded. About 100 of the surviving Småland riders were given the sad but honorable task of escorting the remains of King Gustav II Adolf on their way back to Sweden. Per Gyllensvärd receives his shield letter and new donations Sometime during September 1634, he receives his shield letter, which took place at Stockholm Palace. On 11 May 1635, he receives another fief, on two farms, Solberga and Norby in Stranda härad, Döderhult parish in Småland located, with the following justification. I quote Queen Kristina: Vij Christina p. Gore witterligit, that to us dear, our faithful man and Öfverstelieutenant, Edell and Välbördigh Peder Jonsson has submissively announced the gift, how as KMt: most praiseworthy in memory, our lovable K. Herrfader, has told him for his faithfulness proved tiensth against the Realm's Enemies. Per Jonsson is to help Fredrick Steenbock to recruit people In a letter from February 1638, Per Jonsson receives a power of attorney to help Colonel Fredrick Steenbock recruit new men and horses, or as it says in the letter: While our and the kingdom's service, as the state of the day dictates, that our military on horseback with good cavalry must be reinforced, both the indigenous regiments at home being Gyllensvärd's shield, here in the form of a funeral coat of arms over the son Johan hanging in Bolmsö church. Picture: Roy Lantz and those who are active in Germany (my free translation into new Swedish). It was certainly not an easy task, but above all, not a pleasant task to perform. The mandate was to increase each existing company by 25 horses, which would then consist of 150 horses. The less pleasant part was looking over the crofts inhabited by warrior widows. Between the lines you can read that if the widows were inclined to receive a new soldier or? I quote from the power of attorney: Or and where someone from incapacity or other reasons is forced to do so, then arrange for others to be brought up, there for the same householder to do the service, and to the next nearest muster as the units are, thus ready and able to be ready. It certainly wasn't easy being a soldier's widow at this time, it was just to follow what the higher authority ordered or take your pick and pack and leave the croft, so it was clear to house a new jack at the next muster. At best, the widows received a shard as it is written in a roll from 1634: Eftersch:ne Rÿttares widows should be niuta nådeåhr 1634 Each widow received 10 Richs Dr (but most were more or less without any compensation). It was different with the officers' widows. Like my ancestor on my grandfather's side, lieutenant widow Anna Nilsdotter. She was given a crown home to satisfy her poverty, for her and the children, to enjoy in her lifetime. The home network would be free from taxes and other charges, however with the exception of, among other things, the church tax. To help them carry out the mission, Colonel Stenbock and Per Jonsson had both county governors, bailiffs and commanders who would assist with what was needed.

14 The Landshöfdingen uthi assign that fief to their certain householders, and like fijheet as other our Landsriders shall live and leave in the same place. We invite and command therefore all those who desire and will have to let themselves be acquired that the above-named Lieutenant of the Sigh hoos should indicate and submit a Bond Permit from Germany? Advocatio to Öfverste Leuenanpten Peder Jönsson So began a letter from the 17th of May Per was then with his regiment back in place in Germany and as it says in the letter. My interpretation to New Swedish: It has come to our attention that for some time you left your subordinate riders who are still in Germany and went home to Västergötland. As it stands now, this homecoming is without our approval, but did you get anything from Field Marshal Mr. Baner, so for that reason it is our will and command that as soon as you receive this letter: dispose of your hijt op, to give us what and notice therefrom. Guhd commanded by P. It looks as if everything worked out because at the muster in Jönköping on June 25, 1641, Per Gyllensvärd was the highest commander of the regiment. Colonel Joen Andersson, who took over the Småland cavalry after Fredrik Stenbock (who became colonel of the Adelsfanan), had died. At the muster in 1642, Per Gyllensvärd most likely retired because he is no longer on the rolls. Erik Oxenstjärna was now colonel of the regiment and Staffan Klingspor was appointed lieutenant colonel. So it indicates that Per Gyllensvärd withdrew, but with the war against Denmark in 1644 (Horn's war) even the slightly older officers needed to be dusted off and go back into service. This can be deduced from the royal letters. It was probably his old regimental colonel and friend Per Brahe (kingdom) who was behind the letter from January Per Gyllensvärd sets up a company of Home Guard dragoons On 20 January 1644 Per Jonsson, who had started using his noble name Gyllensvärd a few years ago, got a new mission and this time it was to set up a new company of horsemen or dragoons to be recruited in Småland. It would have the task of guarding and pacifying our internal borders. The company would consist of 200 men and be well equipped. Those who felt motivated should register with Per Gyllensvärd. The farmers who could house dragoons would be rewarded. Governor Conrad Falkenberg was ordered to ensure that Per Gyllensvärd receives all possible assistance. Major General Lars Kagg was also informed of the conditions for the enlistment. Per Gyllensvärd's company is mentioned in Jonny Ambriu's book, Horn's Remaining part of Hössna old church. Picture: Roy Lantz war: 9-15 May 1644 a Swedish army under Gustav Horn besieged the Lagaholm fortress near Laholm. After the capitulation of the Danes, a Swedish yarn son was admitted to Lagaholm under Bengt Liljehöök. Colonel Gyllensvärd and his horsemen were tasked with cleaning operations around Laholm. I think it was Gyllensvärd's horsemen who were in garrison at Långared during the spring winter. The company figures quite frequently in the royal letters. The company was used as an auxiliary a little here and there, as a type of home guard. Per Jonsson Gyllensvärd lays the sword on the shelf in 1646 in June Per dels Confirmation of his previous estates, farms and crofts and partly another donation on two tax homes, Kinnared and Halla in his home parish. The donation letter also contains a lot of so-called rules of conduct. At the same time, he must give up two of the previously donated farms, as can be deduced from the below quote from the letter: he must give up two farms, Sohlberga and Norreby out in Småland, Stranda härad and Döderhult parish located. The conclusion of the letter

15 from Queen Kristina I think it is interesting and fun to quote: In addition, we have certainly signed this with our own hand and have actually let it be our Secret for below. Deed at Vårt Slott Stockholm on the 20th day of the month of June, year after Christ's birth Signed /Christina On 23 September 1650, Per Gyllensvärd receives another donation as stated in the letter: on some homesteads, both in Smålandh and in Västergötlandh located. From the letter it is clear that he has now withdrawn and put the sword on the shelf for good measure. Grief in the house, wife Elisabeth Hand passes away On 10 April 1651, there is grief in the house, because then Per Gyllensvärd's wife Elisabeth dies. According to unconfirmed sources, Elisabeth Hand was buried in the old Hössna church and laid in the choir. Improvement under Alladiality On August 2, 1653, Per Gyllensvärd receives a new letter from Queen Christina and now there was an improvement (correction) under Allodiality (Allodial = free property with full ownership and tax freedom) for Per Jonsson Gyllensvärd, on some estates and farms, located in Västergötland and Småland. From the letter it is clear which estates, farms and crofts are concerned, about 100, further it says to advance and prove, wanted to correct and transform into allodial salvation rights and conditions; and which we hereby grant and give, which we hereby in the power of this open letter find, grant and give, to him and his wife(?) and heirs and heirs after heirs named homestead and outlying lands as above named, there belonging to roads, apartments in houses, Soil, field, meadow, woodland, lakes, streams, fish farming, mill, mill dishes, crofts and croft places, as well as all other additions, wet and dry. On these farms, he could collect rent, however, he should not have the power to displace the tenants from their right, but with good will and consent as the law says (my interpretation into New Swedish). Per Gyllensvärd asks Per Brahe for help In a letter Per Gyllensvärd wrote to Per Brahe in 1658 it appears that he had been ill for a long time and appealed to Brahe for help, partly against Landshövding Printz in Jönköping County and partly for help with some farmers who did not want be drafted into the armed forces. The letter is quite long and partially unreadable, but I will make a valiant attempt to convey some of the content in more modern Swedish without it losing its charm. The letter begins with: Högvälborne Her Rihsdrotset Gracious Count and Lord, mach. Cartridge. Your Highness N: dst towards me and my many proven benefactions, for which I humbly thank your Highness the Count and wish that God the Most High will richly reward you with all spiritual and physical blessings, a thousandfold. Here with you, my gracious count and lord, I cannot humbly allow, how much it is to my heart, that I, the old servant of the crown, who for so many years used myself against the enemies of the kingdom and was my god for pleasure and pleasure, was allowed to be used, now conveys that my prolonged illness prevents me from doing my duty and preferably now in these times of war most submissively and obediently able to complete and prove and therefore you receive the most humble assurance that with my most gracious King and Lord and concerned to the best in such motto be excused and not the less, with assumed liberty, to be obtained, handled, and defended, although the Governor, the well-worn Johan Printz, against all spirit and cheapness, prejudices me in the same way, about which I am highly indignant, here through to Your Highness. The Count in the Royal M's absence complain. The letter is missing some text on the right-hand side, but it is quite clear that the County Governor of Jönköping County, Johan Printz, has begun to question Per Gyllensvärd's various donations. In the letter it appears that he is showing the various confirmations he has received over the years from various Royalties and to come to terms with it all he is now asking for help from Per Brahe. He also needs help against some of his farmers, in particular against Nils Bengtsson, I quote from the letter: Min teske barn farmer ben:dh Nills Bengtsson uthi Bökelie, Sunnerbohäradt, and Croneborgs lähn, vhilkenhade 3 ahrs uhllagor medh sigh in deposit, recently as supply , my sent out vederfahrit ähr.
