About Peter Montgomery, "The Immigrant"

Info from research and historical data gathered by Thomas & Ellen Burke Montgomery; descendents of Charles W. Montgomery; a descendent from the first of our line found Peter Montgomery.

In an index of immigrants compiled from records of land patents 1633-1680 by Gust Skorday, lists Ann Montgomery, transported 1659. It is believed she may have been a relative to our Peter, as it shows later where William Boarman Sr, made deed of gift of 250 acres of "Ann's Delight " then occupied by Peter Montgomery. It is believed that William Boarman's wife may have been Ann Montgomery, the Boarman Manor consisted of 3333 acres granted to Boarman. It is also believed, that Ann may have made arrangements for Peter and his 2 sons to be transported from France prior to 1712.

Peter along with his 2 minor sons John Baptiste & Francis were naturalized Oct 20, 1727.

In Peter's will, he left property to Francis and John his first sons, and to Peter & Richard and others. There is no mention of Elisha or Benjamin, unless these were the second (middle) names of Peter & Richard.

Peter made deposition on Dec 29, 1736 concerning the boundaries at Boarman Manor & Boarman Reserve. He stated that about 20 years ago Abraham LeMasters showed him a bounded tree of these boundaries. Peter owned land in Maryland called "Monmouth" totaling 460 acres, and maybe other property. In 1726 he purchased from William Newman 336 acres.

=====

The following was found on the Archives of Maryland Online – a wonderful source for colonial records! Peter Montgomery was my 5th great-grandfather, born in France in 1682, died in Charles County, Maryland, 1754. His second wife was Margaret Hagan. His son, Charles Montgomery, who married Mary Ann Elder, daughter of Charles Elder and Julia Ward, moved his family to Washington County, Kentucky, about 1795.

Family lore has it that Peter and his twin brother, Paul, sailed from France to Maryland, with their older sons. After finding land and starting their settlement, Paul returned to France to bring their wives and younger children to their new home, while Peter remained in Maryland. On the journey back to Maryland the ship was lost in a violent storm and all aboard perished.
