The career of the aforementioned Samuel Palmer (Peter Sainthill's father-in-law) is interesting because he was instrurnental in improving the conditions at Bart's two outhouses. Palmer held the post as the Lock surgeon for twenty years from 1700 untü his retirement in March, 1720. In keeping with the contemporary traditions of inter-familial medical apprenticeship and nepotism, PaImer successMIy nominated his son-in-law, Peter St. Hill, to replace him. According to the governors' minutes, St HiiI had "served his Apprenticeship with the aforesaid Mr Palmer his Father in Law, and had often been employed by him to dispense Medicine and dress the Poor in the said Hospital".
