Many of the family documents left at the farm by his father Hendrik Jacob Clignet for safekeeping, were destroyed in the house when it was burned by British troops, as they moved the women to the Merebank Concentration Camp in Natal.

Petrus died 18 months before the Anglo-Boer War started. At that time his wife was 3 months preganant with their last child, Melienie. The child died in the Merebank concentration camp.
