Mary Frost, together with her parents and siblings, were members of Damant's Party of 57 Settlers on the Settler Ship Ocean.
Party originated from Norfolk.
Departed London, 13 December 1819. Arrived Table Bay, Cape Town - 9 March 1820.
Final Port - Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth - 15 April 1920
Area Allocated to the Party : The old Waaiplaats barracks, then to the Gamtoos River. They were located at the source of the Kaffir Kraal River but the location was at once rejected by Lieutenant Damant and they moved to the Gamtoos River, their settlement being called Lammas.

Transcribed copy of letter from Mary Nash van Lelyveld to her son Petrus Johannes Francis Henri and his wife Annie: (2 years 9 mth after her husband's death)
1st November 1894.

My dear Peter and Annie,
I once more take the pen to send you a few lines having no tiding from you since the one from the war. Am anxious to hear from you. I wrote to Annie and Sophie but no answer that makes me think that someone may be ill but then again I think they living on a farm it must be awkward to get to the post and sometimes I am without stamps in this village you cant get them always. Well I must tell you the tidings of your poor sister Sarah; there is no hope of her recovering. She knows it and seems quite happy to depart from this world of trouble & pain, I never thought that Cancer was such an awful and painful thing.It's such agony at times that we think it will finish her off,then abate again then she seems quite cheerful. She gave me the Dr book for you and gave me your poor father's hair, which you sent for her. I hadn't a bit, I asked Martha Frost for a bit of hair but she never answered me I mean to put it in the brooch of the VAN LELYVELD's he brought from Holland with him. All that can be done has been done for her, prayers offered for her recovery but all in vain the Almighty knows best for what he is taking her away from us, we don't know for what misery we want to keep her so we must be contented and let her depart to the arms of Jesus. We must not fret, she will be happy & glad to know it will not be leaving a young family behind. Mary & Peter will feel the loss very much I am worn out I don't feel able to keep about but I can't see her want help we have lots to do trying this and that to relieve her. Dorie Myburg comes to help sometimes last week she went into the garden. Pieter took a chair with them for her to sit on every few minutes we used to go out with the Cart until very lately. Well Mrs Palferman wrote that the locusts are near where they live just beyond Lydenburg.I hope they won't go nearer and destroy my poor Phillip's corn.I had a pittyful letter from Mrs Lombaard took the wagon for rent and he had only three oxen left alive them he gave to Mr Parsons but I hope he will get a situation in town in a store.Oh it's hard but I hope the Almighty will help us to gain your poor Father's inheritance for the sake of my poor children if I succeed in it which we will soon hear as it has to be settled and paid out on the 6th of this month so its only five days ofcourse we cant hear how it is until the letters come to my Atorney Haarhoff & Mechan in Kimberley. I don't wish for riches but to help my poor children pay their little debts. I must close. I am writing on my legs on the bed so its very crooked as I find but never mind with love from us and kisses for the dear little ones
