PROSKAUER--Paul F., Ph.D., son of the late Dr. Curt and Erna Proskauer and brother of the late Henry G. Proskauer passed away on August 9th. He was born in Breslau, Germany in 1921 and attended a humanistic Gymnasium (Johannesgymnasium) (Latin, French, Greek) for 7½ years until November 9, 1938 (Kristallnacht). In June 1939 he had to leave Germany with his parents and went to Italy to await there the issuance of the immigration visas to USA. From September 1939 until May 1940 he lived in Rome. Since his father who was a dentist in Breslau where he had published in 1926 the first pictorial history of Dentistry Iconographia Odontologica' and had also had from 1926 to 1933 in Berlin position of Director of the Research Institute for History of Dentistry Forschungsinstitut fur Geschichte der Zahnheilkunde - because of this and because of his personal acquaintance with the dentist of Pope Pius XII: Dr. A Piperno - he received permission to do research work in the Vatican Library in the field of history of dentistry. And it was the Vatican Library - possibly Cardinal Tisserant - who asked the Italian Steamship Company to reduce the fare from Italy to New York by 50% thus enabling the Proskauer family to leave Italy before Italy entered the war. His parents and Paul arrived in New York on May 23rd, 1940 and his brother Henry already in April 1940 - coming directly from Zurich to Naples and then to New York. His brother Henry had attended the ETH (Eidgebossische Technische Hochschule) in Zurich, Switzerland from 1935 until 1940 where he had studied architecture - where Prof. Salvisberg had been an outstanding architect and Henry's Professor. Paul attended in New York at first for eight months George Washington High School at night and took the Regents exams in English, American History and American Government in June 1941. In September 1941 he was admitted to attend the School of Business and Civic Administration of the College of the City of New York (now Baruch College) and graduated in 1945 "cum laude". He then worked for an export company for a few years, to earn money and began graduate studies in German Literature in 1959: he received a Master's Degree from Hunter College and his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in 1966 from the Department of Germanic Languages at Columbia University. He taught full time German Language and Literature courses at Hunter College, then Hunter College in the Bronx which was named eventually Lehman College for nearly 30 years and retired as Professor Emeritus. He is not survived by any member of his family. His grandmother on his father's side: Selma Proskauer was distantly related to Federal Appeal Court Judge Jacob Trieber was killed in an extermination camp and his uncle (his mother's brother). Dr. Willy Cohn - a specialist in the Hohenstuffen-era - was shot with his wife and two small daughters in Lithuania November 1941. His father's sister Ella Brinnitzer was killed in Auschwitz with her husband. When Paul was an undergraduate he was accepted by the College Honorary Society Sigma Alpha and after graduation by the National Honorary Society for students of Business Colleges 'Beta Gamma Sigma' (the scholastic equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa). His father Dr. Curt received shortly before his death in 1972 the Order of Merit from the German Government. 'Das Grosse Bundesverdienstkreuz'. Paul and his brother had decided to donate their book - and art collection to the Kantons - Library in Schwyz, Switzerland. Henry had already given three works of German Expressionism an Oil by Otto Mueller and two watercolors by Erich Heckel to the Brucke Museum in Berlin and had previously donated an architectural drawing by Poelzig to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Both Henry and Paul were members if Modern Art for more than 50 years. During the last few years of his life Paul was happy when he could attend symphony and chamber music concerts in Carnegie Hall which he tried to support in his way. Paul was especially grateful for the personal interest and kindness of the three Rodriguez sisters: Rachel, Jennifer and Cindy who in their twenties had also known Henry and were good friends and companions. It was Paul's special wish to express to Dr. Jerry Gliklich and his wonderful secretary Ms. Joan how grateful he was for the extraordinary care and personal interest Dr. Gliklich had for many years shown to both brothers. Memorial services Tuesday, August 19 at 9am at Frank E. Campbell, The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave. (81st St.)
