About Philip Phillip Packer, Esq.
Philip was born at Moat House at the Groombridge estate. He was christened at either the Collegiate Church or Abbey of St. Peter's in Winchester.
He was a Fellow of the Royal Society. His first wife was Isabel Berkeley, the daughter of Sir Robert Berkeley, by whom he had 3 children: Robert, John and Isabella. His son Philip was by his second wife, Sarah Isgar.
From John Evelyn's diary : "6/4/1652, dau. of James and Anna Sessions from Whitney, July 4, 1652. I heard a sermon at Mr. Packer's Chapel at Groombridge. A pretty, melancholy place, well wooded and watered. In this (Moat) House, was one of the French Kings kept prisoner (the Duke of Orleans, taken at the Battle of Agincourt) by Richard Waller, the owner. The Chapel was built by Mr. Packer's father in remembrance of the safe return of Charles, Prince of Wales, from Spain."
"August 6, 1674. I went to see my old friend at Groombridge, Mr. Packer; the house well built within a moat in a woody valley."
"October 3, 1683. came to visit me my old and worthy friend, Mr. Packer, bringing with him his nephew, Berkeley, grandson of the honest judge."
In December 1670 a warrant was issued to Philip Packer (paymaster) for £6,000 on account of impaling and fencing Windsor Great Park..On 5/5/1671, a warrant for payment by woodward and officers of the New Forest and the Forest of Alseholt and East and West Bears, was issued Philip Packer. The close connection between the Berkeleys and Philip Packers and the deputyship of Lord John Berkeley to Ireland, induced Philip to "intend to shortly cross the seas into Ireland," as he writes. He settled in Dublin, where he died 12/24/1686, age 68 years and where letters of administration were issued after Philip Packer, formerly of Groombridge, Kent, Esq., and in England on 4/26/1687. He was buried at Groombridge; there is a memorial to him in the estate's chapel.
In his will, dated 5/20/1684, he bequeathed Groombridge to his son John and left cash legacies to his daughters and his grandchildren [Elisha Packer His Ancestors and Descendants, Family 5].
