Our Ancester, Philip Ziegler, was born in
Bern, Switzerland, in 1734, and at the age of twelve, or in 1746, he emigrated to America. This agrees with the record found in an old Bible still in the pos- session of the family of Eli Ziegler near Rehersburg, Berks Co., Pa. These dates also agree with Rupp's "Thirty Thousand Names."

Brumbaugh in his History of the Brethren differs from this, for he places the year of his emigra- tion as 1734. Noticing that this date agrees with the year of his birth in the above record, the mistake may have occurred in that way.

He married Rsgina Reguel, anativeof Wurtem burg, Germany, and settled on a farm near Rehers- burg, Berks Co.Co. This farm has been in the Ziegler name ever since. Emanuel Ziegler, a member of the fifth gen- eration, now lives upon this pleasant old homestead. Upon this farm was built the Ziegler Meeting House, a small brick structure which was replaced by a commodious frame building in 1875.

In the orchard on this old homestead is a small grave yard containing the unmarked grave of our ancestor.

It is evident that sometime during his lifetime he also purchased another farm adjoining the former and extending back to the Swatara. This also has been in the family to the present.

8 ZIEGLER FAMILY RECORD.

Philip also secured the passage of his mother and his sister to this country. This sister married Gossert and from this family are descended most of the families by this name in Berks and Lebanon Counties. They settled on the homestead on the Swatara just west of the Ziegler farms.

It is altogether likely that our ancestors be- longed to the Mennoaite Church in the Old Country, but probably for the reason that there were none of that persuasion convenient, Philip joined the Re- formed Church.

Morgan Edwards in his account of the mem- bers of the early congregations in the year 1770 men- tions Philip Ziegler and wife as members of the Little Swatara Congregation of the German Baptist Brethren, and a large majority of the succeeding generations belonged to this denomination.

There have been exceptions to this, however, and ministers and church workers of other persua- sions are also among the respected and honored members of this family.

Taking a general survey of the family whose record here follows, we notice that while it has not been a royal lineage there hava been some of its members that have occupied prominent positions in the affairs of county and state.

Habits of frugality and industry, a simple, honest, unostentatious life and the inspiration of an invigorating and healthful rural home life have had a most salutory effect in developing people who have in many inst mces, in the later generations, become leaders in their respective cillings.

As we follow out the different branches of the family we notice in the ranks ministers of the gospel, bishops in the Church, doctors, lawyers, college professors, members of Legislature, county officers,

Immigrated when 12 years old on the ship "Ann Galley" 9/27/1746.

Tradition passed down through the family states that he took wagonloads of food to the soldiers at Valley Forge during the Revolution.

Philip died before May, 25, 1803 in Tulpehocken Twp, Berks county, and was buried in the small family cemetery on their farm. His wife Regina died in 1824, near Rehrersburg, Pa. she was 94 years old. She was buried in the small cemetery on the old farm, next to her husband. There are no existing markers to indicate the burial location. Two memorial markers have been erected for him, one in 1912 in Row 20, of the Ziegler's Meetinghouse Brethren Cemetery

(note the Revolutionary War Marker), and another in 2000 in the Enclosed Ziegler Family Cemetery (actual burial location) which is located just south of the Ziegler's Meetinghouse Brethren Cemetery. Both cemeteries are located on land which was Philip Ziegler's farmstead that remained in the family for over 200 years, until 1972 when it was sold to a non family member.

GEDCOM Note

Generation 1 Henry Numbering System in Mason = 1 Mason includes the following. "He was born in Bern, Switzerland and came to America in 1746. Regina Requel was a native of Wurttemberg, Germany. In 1758 they settled on a farm on which the Ziegler German Baptist Church (now Rehrersburg Mennonite) stands. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the pasture field on his farm. A monument has been erected in the pasture field and another in the cemetery adjoining the church. The church and the cemetery were at one time a part of the Ziegler farm. The church was a ChB Church until recently when purchased by the Mennonites and for years was known as the Ziegler Meeting House and Ziegler Cemetery. They are located in Berks Co., PA between Bethel and Rehrersburg. The Airport Road goes through the two farms.

He is listed in the DAR register of Pennsylvania volunteers who served during the Revolutionary War.

It is reported that he brought his mother and sister to America. We do not know their names, the sister married a man by the name of Gossett and they owned a farm near the Ziegler Homestead. If you know anything about the mother's name or the sister's descendants, please inform the compiler."
