Philippus 'Flip' Rudolph (Rudolf) de Bruin (1932 - 1999)

Brief overview:

Flip (67), of Farm Middelplaas, in Weenen, KZN, was shot dead at point blank range, as he walked out of his house, on 28th September 1999. One of his farm workers knew that he had drawn R200,000 and locked the money in the safe. Five men then planned to steal the cash.

Three of them approached the foreman asking to buy cattle, while the other two stood guard on the road. Flip walked out of his house and reached for his handgun, and one of the three men shot him at point-blank range, stole his firearm and chased after the foreman. Flip's domestic worker radioed for help, and the local security cell responded.

  • Ten days later the farm worker and other five suspects were arrested. The employee led police to the other five. Investigators found three rifles and 315 rounds of ammunition. One of the rifles was a police-issue R1 that had been stolen in Kimberley three months previously. They also found the gun used to kill the farmer, as well as R40,000 in cash.
