About Phillip Hager

PHILLIP HAGER JR., born around abt. 1770, son of Phillip Hager, was old enough to sign petitions in Wythe County, VA by 1793. He appears on the 1798 (1802) and 1806 tax list of Kanawha County, VA and the 1810 tax list of Cabell County. This list shows two other males in his household over 16 years old. This is probably James and Andrew. He died between November 1843 and February 1844 on Spruce Fork near Ramage Hill and is probably buried there. He had a mill in the narrows below the mouth of Six Mile Creek.

Phillip first settled on Powell Creek when he came to this area. He sold this tract of 600 acres to James Hager in 1843. I have never found the deed from William Dingess and David French for this tract and now feel that Phillip may have settled on the wrong tract. There is a deed for the Dingess and French 630 acre Survey which starts at Ramage and runs up Spruce Fork to near Sharples. This deed is recorded in Cabell County.

It appears that this Phillip was married twice, lst to Catherine Vannatter and a 2nd wife name unknown. There is no proof for this statement, but census records seem to bear it out. His second wife may have been a Garrett. Catherine was living between Low Gap and Ramage when the 1850 Boone County Census was taken. Age 80 years old she stated to the Census Taker that she was born in Maryland. She appears to be the mother of Benjamin Hager or at least raised him.

Children of Phillip Hager and his first wife appear to be: James who married lst ?, 2nd Sarah Pauley; Andrew who married 1st Nancy Barker, 2nd Wineford McNeely; Rosanna who married Isom Mullins of Floyd County, KY. and was the parents of Dorcas who married James P. Kelly Mullins; Mary who married lst (not sure maybe a Ballard), 2nd Benjamin Mullins, and 3rd John F. Toney; John who married Elizabeth Miller; and possibly Benjamin who married Elizabeth Brooks. By his 2nd wife Phillip had Dicy who married William Martin; Dorcas who married James Dempsey; and Lucinda who married Sherod Lucas. He also had, by this second wife, a son and two daughters who are unidentified. Submitted by.
