About Phillippe Kellogg

Birth: Sep. 15, 1560

Essex, England

Death: Oct. 24, 1583

Debden

Essex, England

Phillip, aka Phillipe, was the son of Ellen (unknown) and Thomas Kellogg of Essex Co, England. Old records show him born in the village of Bocking, which may now be Bocking Churchstreet a short drive NNE of Braintree in Essex Co.

Christening: 1560 in Debden, Essex Co, England.

Marriage: 2 Oct 1579 to Anne/Annis MYNOT (or MINOT).

One source, "Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley - Vol 1" by John Woolf Jordan, lists Phillipe's name as Phillip. Reportedly there are records in Essex Co, England that show this spelling as well.

Note: There is a burial record for a daughter named Annis Kellogg, which reinforces the idea that her mother had the same name and spelling. Older KELLOGG sources usually show Phillip's wife's name as being unknown, but more modern sources (access to Essex Co. records) tend to identify her as this person.

Phillip KELLOGG first appears in Bocking, Essex County, a parish adjoining Braintree, on 15 September 1583, when his son, Thomas, was baptised. Two years later he was in Great Leighs, where his son, Robert, was baptised in 1585, the first time that the name KELLOGG appears in the registers of that parish. Baptismal records for all his children have not been found, as is shown by the burial of his unrecorded daughter, Annis, in Great Leighs, on 25 May 1611. The registers of Great Leighs exist back to 1558.

A search of the Court rolls of Great Leighs fails to reveal the name of KELLOGG, though researchers need to continue to check for other spellings common in his time (CELLOUG, etc.).

No record of his death in Great Leighs has been found, and since the records of Great Leighs are quite full, it is probable that he did not die there. He may have removed to Braintree and had other children, but the records of Braintree extend no farther back than 1660 and the earliest known date of a KELLOGG in Braintree was in 1623, when Moses Woll mentioned Phillippe's son, Robert, in his will.

Their known children:

1) Thomas, baptized in Bocking 15 September 1583, buried 1 December 1663; married in Great Leighs 4 May 1611, Annis Hare. In the record of his marriage his name is spelled Celoge.

2) Annis, buried in Great Leighs, 25 May 1611.

3) Robert, baptized in Great Leighs on 14 November 1585, buried in Braintree, 18 January 1666.

4) Mary, baptized in Great Leighs on 16 February 1588; married 1 May 1628, William Stotturne.

5) Prudence, baptized in Great Leighs on 20 March 1592, buried 24 March 1629.

6) Martyn, or Martin.

7) Nathaniel; married Elizabeth; he was a founder of Hartford, Connecticut, and died in New England.

8) John

9) Jane; married ? Allison

10) Rachel, died before 20 October 1666; married Samuel Cave, who made his will mentioning his three daughters, Rachel, the wife of John Parborow; Phoebe and Mary, and a son, Nathaniel.

The Kellogg information is primarily derived from three sources, supplemented by others. The principal work is The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New, by Timothy Hopkins, 1903. The American lineage also appears in Genealogies of Hadley Families, by Lucius M. Boltwood, 1862, and The Family History of Judge Ellsworth B. Belden and Collateral Families, by Stanley R. Belden, et al., 1980.

Walter G. Ashworth

He married Florence Hall about 1510. Florence was born about 1490, daughter of William Hall, and was buried 8 Nov 1571, also in Debden.

born possibly at Debden, England. First appears in Bocking, Essex in 1583, and resided at Great Leighs from 1585. Probably the son of Thomas and grandson of Nicholas, of Debden, who married Florence HALL, daughter of William HALL. The marriage of Phillippe is not found, but his first recorded child was born in 1583. Evidence suggests the last five children listed below were of a second marriage.

BIRTH, MARRIAGE, & DEATH RECORDS.

Kellogg GenForum: Two Kellogg Marriages in England. By Thomas Kellogg December 29, 2003 at 06:54:10. Through research and writing to Essex Records Office Idiscovered the following two Kellogg marriages: Thomas Kellogg (aka Thomas Ryche alias Kelloge marriedJuliana Westleyeon October 4, 1550 in Thaxted (near Debden) Essex Co., England. I got this directly from Essex Records Office. See also Boyd's Marriage Index which reports a marriage between Thomas Kellog and Juliana Westlyin 1550 in Thaxted, Essex (access can be had through www.englishorigins.com). Also, I learned directly from Essex Records Office thatPhillippe Kellog and Anne Mynot were married on October 2, 1579 in BlackNotley, Essex. In a published Minot genealogy I learned that Robert Minot of EssexCo. had a daughter, Anne, who may have been the wife of Phillippe Kellogg. Note that Phillippe's second child was Annis (equivalent of Anne) and his third child was Robert. Could they have been named for hiswife and father-in-law? I think it likely as this appears to be an introduction of the name Robert into the Kellogg line. Why, unless thechild was named after Robert Minot, his maternal grandfather. Phillippe's first child was named Thomas - my guess is that he was named after his paternal grandfather.
