Phillipus Jeremias Mryburgh (1946 - 2004)
Brief overview:
Phillipus (57), and his wife, Maria Cornelia Meyburgh (37), were attacked in their home in Brakpan, when three robbers gained entry on 16th June 2004. Phillipus was murdered in the house, after which the killers then abducted Ria in the couple's red Volkswagen Golf.
Ria's body was found on 21st June in a field between Springs and KwaThema. She had been raped by the killers before they murdered her.
On 30th July 2006, Judge Aubrey Ledwaba passed sentence on the three accused. Malebo Makgetlaheng was sent to prison twice for life for the two murders while his two co-accused, Martin Mahlangu and Thabiso Ndlela, each three life sentences got. Their third sentence is for the rape of Ria.
During the sentencing, Ledwaba said crime had adopted "frightening proportions" whereby "innocent and law-abiding" members of society are murdered in their own homes.
The couple had only been married for six weeks.
