Biography

Pheobe Smith was born at Boston on June 27, 1673, daughter of John Smith and his second wife Mary Bill. [1] [2]

She married John Brintnall by 1690/1. [2]

October 9, 1721, Lieutenant John Brintnall executed a deed of gift of the farm to his son Thomas Brintnall, when he reaches age 21, to take effect at John and Phebe's deaths. As son Thomas died in 1732, without heirs, his estate was to descend to his nephew Benjamin, son of John Jr., however the farm was to be rented and the rentals paid to the children of Lieutenant John Brintnall, until each received L200: viz:

Phoebe Sprague
John Brintnall Jr.
Mary Wigglesworth
James Brintnall
Esther Brintnall
widow Phoebe Brintnall also held a life interest in the estate [2]
Her husband John Sr. died on October 7, 1731, aged seventy years. [2]

In his will written in September, 1731 and submitted to court on October 9, 1731, he names:

wife
son John
daughters Phebe, Mary and Esther
grandson Benjamin Smith, son of John
the two children Edward and Mary
son James
James children James, Mary and ????, L5 each
son Thomas, what was given him by deed
my Wigglesworth children
grandson John, son of John
cousin Mary Tuttle
grandson John, son of James
daughter Phebe Sprague
son in law Samuel Wigglesworth [3]
His estate was inventoried on November 22, 1731 was valued at L885 4s 6d, with minimal real estate, already given to his children during his life, but did include a 'negro woman and two negro men'. [2] [3]

On August 23, 1732, his eldest son John petitioned to be appointed executor of his father's estate, in the place of his brother Thomas now deceased. And on September 11, 1732, widow Phoebe Brintnall and John Brintnall Jr. were appointed to execute the will of Lieutenant John Brintnall in the place of Thomas Brintnall. [3] [2]

On November 6, 1732, son James Brintnall petitioned the court, that his mother and brothers appear for an interpretation of John Sr.'s will, as James had been called 'unworthy son' who had 'deatroyes and wasted what was given him' and left only 20s in his father's will. [3] [2]

The estate was not settled for many years as in 1735/6, 1736/7, in 1748 after John Jrs' death and again in 1752 various heirs were named in petitions to the court to secure their legacies, or in settlements , including son James Brintnall, Phebe and Stowers Sprague, Esther and Samuel West, grandchild Mary Wigglesworth and Samuel Wigglesworth . [3] [2]

Phebe's sister Jemimah's third husband Andrew Lane, of Boston wrote his will in April, 1747 and it was presented at court on April 18m 1749. Among his bequests he left L50 to Phebe Brintnall, sister to my late wife. [4]

Phebe died at Chelsea on April 19, 1753. [2]
