About Phoebe Louise Rogers

Born in the small English fishing village of Pentewan, the 7th in a family of 8 children - Jack, Molly, Annie, Effie, Isobel, Winnifred, Phoebe and Elsie. The family left for Australia from London aboard the S.S.Norseman on 27.2.1913 and finally settled at 33 Talbot Avenue, Balwyn, Victoria. Worked in Coles where she met Joe Rogers and married on 26th. January,1929. The family moved to Sydney, then to Perth before Joe enlisted in RAAF and the family moved back to Melbourne where they lived at "33". Peta - as she was known to the family - studied to become a chiropodist and during the war worked at Buckley & Nunn in the city. In 1949, the family moved to Yallourn where Phoebe became interested in Red Cross (becoming President of the sub branch), amateur theatre with Yallourn Little Theatre which won a state competition, gardening and lawn bowls at which she excelled winning several club championships. Upon Joe's retirement in 1969, they moved to Newborough from where they travelled on many camping and fishing trips, before finally they moved to Cobram. Phoebe was a wonderful mother, magnificent homemaker and superb cook. Held in the memories of those who tried them were her Cornish pasties, curries, patties, apple sponge and shortcake, lemon cake and a range of cookies. She long accepted that she was not the greatest sponge maker in the world! Phoebe died at the Cobram Hospital, her last year severely affected by a stroke which left her speechless. She was cremated at the Springvale Crematorium.
