About Phyllis Louise Lawrence
From www.thepeerage.com: "Phyllis Louise Napier was born on 4 August 1868. She was the daughter of Edward Napier and Marthe Louise Buddicom. She married Sir Henry Staveley Lawrence, son of George Henry Lawrence, on 23 January 1899. She died in July 1912 at age 43."
A legend grew around her in Karachi, which grandparents would tell to their grandchildren, and it was this:
"Phyllis had very long beautiful hair. One day she decided to go on a carriage ride by herself. She got the carriage to a good speed but unfortunately, her long flowing hair became entangled in the spokes of the carriage wheel and she was pulled off the carriage and dragged for a long time before the horses came to a stop. Her husband was so devastated by her death that he built a huge mausoleum in her memory with a white dome and six pillars. Most of the structure is sandstone, except the plaque on which her name is written, and this is in marble. It seems that her spirit was restless after her death and would call out to her husband on certain nights and her ghost was also reportedly spotted." There is a video of the cemetery, Gora Kubristan, on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUo-ItqxijU, published in January 2013, which shows the tomb and describes work to restore it.
