About Pieter Dirck Middagh, Sr.
Pieter MIDDAGH, Sr. was born 20 Aug 1700 in Somerset, NJ. Cameron Allen in his American Genealogist article, reports Pieter was born on 8/26/1700. This date apparently was obtained from a copy of an ancient (1637) family bible (VAN NEST, MIDDAGH, ATEN) in the possession of William Aten of Candor, PA. The copy is deposited in the MSS room of the Rutgers University Library. Pieter was christened 26 Sep 1700 in Raritan, NJ. Witnesses: Isack Bodyn and wife.
Pieter died before 28 Oct 1790 in Mount Bethel, Northampton, PA. Pieter's will, dated 8/14/1778, was probated 10/28/1790. In the will he is referred to as Pieter MIDDAGH of Mount Bethel in the County of Northampton. The will gave his son Garret "...the sum of Five Pounds in full of his Birth Right... All personal estate to be equally divided among the children in three months next after decease, ... namely to Garret Middagh, Cathlinjie Middagh, Marittie Middagh, Elizabeth Middagh, Anne Middagh, Peter Middagh, Rebecca Middagh and my Grandson, Johannes, Anne, her son -- share and share alike...If Anne die having no other Issue her Legacy is to be given to her son, Johannes..." The will makes several other specific bequests. The executors of the will were his sons Garret and Peter and a son-in-law, Andreas Van Vliedt.
Pieter was a witness at a baptism at the Raritan DRC on 3/17/1723. He was a member of the NJ Legislature in 1754 and a collector of Proclamation Money for Hunterdon County in 1758. He is listed as a "Freeholder" in Hunterdon Co., in 1741 and a member of the Readington DRC in 1750. Most of his children were baptized in the Readington Church and according to Cameron Allen he moved to the Readington area shortly after marrying Marritje DE MOTT. On 5/10/1763 Joseph FOX sold Peter 575 acres of land in Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, PA. (See Northampton Deeds D-3:93). On 7/1/1764 Peter sold part of the land to Adrian ATTEN and another piece of the land to Dirck LOW. At this time he still referred to himself as being of Amwell (NJ). On 7/24/1770 he purchased 12.5 acres of the land back from Derrick LOW referring to himself as of Mt. Bethel Township, PA. Adrian and Dirck were nephews of Peter. Adrian was the s/o Jacobje (MIDDAGH) ATEN and Dirck the s/o Judith (MIDDAGH) LOW. Adrian was also related thru Peter’s wife, Marritje. Her mother was Marritje ATEN.
After moving to PA about 1770, Peter and his family transferred their church affiliation to the Presbyterian Church. In 1772 Peter paid a tax of 9 Pounds on his possesions in Mount Bethel Township of Northampton County, PA. He does not appear in either the 1786 or 1788 tax roles. Marritje apparently did not live long after their move to PA as she does not appear in his will dated 8/14/1778. He lived some time longer because his will was not probated until 10/28/1790. In it he mentions sons, Garret and Peter, daughters, Cathlintjie, Marittie, Elizabeth, Anne, Rebecca and a grandson, (s/o Anne), Johannes. From receipts signed for dispersal of the will it appears Cataline was unmarried, Elizabeth had married a VAN VLIEDT (VAN FLEET) and Rebecca had married a VANETTE (or VANNETTEN).
He married Marrietje DE MOTT. Pieter and Marrietje are shown as the parents of a number of children in the church records of baptisms.
