About Dirck Aertsen Middagh

Dirck Aertsen MIDDAGH was born before 1671 in New Netherland. His date and place of birth are based on the fact his parents returned to Holland in 1671 and he appears to have been born prior to their leaving Brooklyn. He was christened about 1671 in New Netherlands. Rosalie Fellows Bailey in her book "Pre-Revolutionary Dutch Houses and Families in Northern New Jersey and Southern New York" on page 446 states that Dirck was baptized March 3, 1672 in New York. Since it is known that Aert and his family had departed for Holland prior to that time, the date given by Ms. Bailey obviously is incorrect. A more likely date would be 3/3/1671. However no baptismal record has been located and so his birth and baptismal date remain a matter of conjecture except to say that all of the evidence appears to support his being born in New York prior to his parents moving to Holland. Dirck died before 5 May 1716 in Raritan, Somerset, NJ.

Establishing a lineage for Dirck requires the acceptance of a second Dirck. One of the reasons for believing that there was a second Dirck is: it can be proven that Aert had a son, Dirck, born before 1671 and there are records where a Dirck MIDDAGH (AERTSEN?) was baptized 3 Mar 1672/3 in New York. Since Aert and his family (including his son, Dirck) were living in Holland at that time, the Dirck baptized 3 Mar 1672/3 could not be the son of Aert. In addition to the birth/baptismal date conflict, examination of the many records that exist pertaining to or referring to Dirck MIDDAGH reveal a number of other conflicts that can only be resolved if a second Dirck existed.

The following points out some of these conflicts:

1. According to a Middag Genealogy prepared by Donald C. Donohue (copy on file at the Ulster County Genealogical Society), Dirck and Catalyntje VAN NESTE had a daughter, Sarah, and three other children after the birth of Sarah.

2. In Catherine Deming's book "Grandmas & Grandpas of YesterYear" she does not report the birth of Sarah but does list a daughter, Deborah, and a son, Samuel, without birth dates for either.

3.The birth of a Sarah MIDDAGH (and her marriage to Derrick VAN VEGHTEN) also is reported by John Neafie in his article "The Somerset Middagh Family" in Volume 6 of the SCHS Qua rt erl y.

4. Since Dirck, husband of Catalyntje VAN NESTE, died before May 5, 1716, the probability of the birth of 4 children following that of Gerrit, which occurred in 1712, is remote.

However, since Mr. Neafie and other researchers list Sarah as a d/o Dirck and Catalina, even though no record of her birth or baptism has been found, this compilation includes her as one of their children. The other children attributed to them are shown as children of the "other Dirck".

These conflicts in data are further compounded by Frank Allaben in his "Ancestry of Leander Howard Crall". In it he states that Dirck Aertsen MIDDAGH, of Brooklyn and subsequently of Flushing, Long Island, was twice married. His will was made February 24 1678, and proved September 4, 1710. He had the following children: Judith, baptised May 26, 1696; Cornelius, baptised June 13, 1698; Benjamin (thought to be his son), who married Annitie STRYKER; Samuel, who died when an infant; Deborah; and Samuel." One of the confusing things about Mr. Allaben's statement is the date the will was made. It is highly unlikely that a child born after 1665 and before 1671 or one baptized 3 Mar 1672/3 would be making a will in February 1678. Mr. Allaben's date is either a typographical error or a mistake unless (and there is the possibility) there was still another Dirck. Another conflict exists; Dirck MIDDAGH, husband of Catalyntje VAN NESTE, died in New Jersey leaving a will which was proven 5 May 1716 naming children and disposing of property in New Jersey.

As indicated above there also is a will for Dirck MIDDAGH proven in 1710 in the New York records. Obviously confusion reigns and the lineages are somewhat uncertain. However, analysis of all of the available data, including that recently found in Dutch publications and archives, indicates the most logical solution (and the one that best conforms to documented data) is to assume two Dirck MIDDAGHs, one who moved to and settled in the Raritan Valley in NJ in 1698 (he and his wife are sponsors/witnesses at the baptism of Jaquemina VAN NESTE on 3/8/1699 according to the records of the First Reformed Church at Raritan, NJ); and, one of unknown ancestry, who remained on Long Island. The lineages shown in this compilation are based on this assumption.

Dirck, s/o Aert, moved to Raritan (Somerville), Somerset County, NJ some time prior to 1699 and raised his family there. In 1709 he purchased a farm from his father-in-law. At his death in 1716 the farm became the property of his son, Cornelius. In 1734 Cornelius sold part of the farm to his brother, Joris (George). As noted previously, Dirck and Catalyntje appear as sponsors/witnesses to baptisms in the Raritan DRC records starting in 1699; and baptismal records of all of their children born after Cornelius (stating with Piter/Pieter in 1700) can be found in the records of the Raritan DRC.

He married Catalyntje Pieterse VAN NESTE about 1690 in New York. Though a record of the marriage of Dirck and Catalyntje has not been located, there are records of them being listed as the parents of children in archives of various Dutch Reformed Churches. In Ms. Sharpin's book "Rapalje Rasters" she states Derick and Catalyn were married about 1697. However, church records published in the Somerset County Historical Society Quarterly indicates Dirck and Catalyntye had three children; Aert, Jacobje and Judith (with records of the baptizm of Jacobje and Judith) prior to 1697. Therefore, the 1690 date reported in Volume I of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey is used in this compilation rather than 1697 as reported by Ms. Sharpin.
