About Pita Heremaia Te Wake
"Pita Te Wake mentioned in Whina's Biography
Posted 25 Feb 2020 by Mark Cribbens
"Heremia's first family was grown up and marriedwhen he took up with Kare Pauro. They were shocked and possibly even jealous about the second marriage. He was fifty-seven, his new wife fiften. One consequence was that Heremia gave the home that his father had left him at Whakarapa to one of his sons, Pita, and went to live with his child bride on his land at Te Karaka." Michael King, Whina A Biography of Whina Cooper, 1983 (Page 35)
"When Whina was in her second year at school, Heremia decided to move back to the family home at Whakarapa [Panguru]. This was partly so that his youngest children would not have to walk so far for their education, and partly so he could take over the running of his farm there from his son Pita." Michael King, Whina A Biography of Whina Cooper, 1983 (Page 48)
"Heremia had not made a will. He had decided upon and written down a division of his property amoung his first family before Whina was born, and he had never altered this... The result was that Whina's brothers claimed the family home and told her she would need to vacate it" Michael King, Whina A Biography of Whina Cooper, 1983 (Page 83 & 84)
"So Whina telegramed back to Panguru, asking her brothers to call a meeting of all the people that night at Parish Hall... The I said "Now people, I want ot marry William Cooper. And I am telling you so you can all agree." "Well it was a bomshell. They weren't expecting that. I sat down and there was silence for a minute. And then there was pandemonium. Everybody was shouting. My brothers were furious. one of them, Pita Te Wake, rushed toward me to attack me, to give me a hiding. And my komiti wahine, who were very loyal to me, had to gather round to protect me from him. He was shouting out: 'We thought you were a princess, we thought you were a queen. We lifted you right up on top of that mountain there, Panguru. You were as high as anyone could go in our eyes. And now you what to go and live with a married man. You've sunk right to the bottom, to the depths, you're worth nothing now. And they were still holding him, he was so upset. My poor brother Pita.'" [Michael King, Whina A Biography of Whina Cooper, 1983 (Page 136 & 137)]
