"...Alberic III duly appointed one of his sons - also christened Theophylact like his uncle Benedict VIII, and the latest papal Tusculan further echoed his uncle by styling himself Benedict IX (1032-48/56). There, all resemblance ceased. The new Benedict showed not the slightest interest in anthing religious and occupied himself with sex (reputedly in all possible forms), acquiring wealth, and plotting against the opposition whom his outrageous behaviour generated within the city, to the extent - again reputedly of organising assassinations. The uncertainty over his dates reflects the consequent turbulence of his reign. His first term of office came to an end when he was driven out of the city in 1044. He then forced his way back in the following year, before deciding to sell the job on to his godfather so that he could get married (the only Pope known to have sold his own position) but then reoccupied it briefly before finally being deposed"

Egli nel 1033 aveva 20 o 21 anni circa.

Morto probabilmente nel monastero di Grotta Ferrata, post 18 settembre 1055/ ante o9 febbraio 1056, sepolto nell'abbazia di Gotta Ferrata; creato Cardinale Diacono dallo zio Benedetto Vlll, eletto papa sul finire del 1033 col nome di BenedettolX e consacrato nel gennauio 1034; corrotto e nepotista, fu cacciato da una sommossa popolare nel 1044, ma rientrò a Roma grazie all'aiuto del fratello Gregorio ll e del cugino Gerardo conte di Galeria(un tuscolano di cui si ignora in quale grado imparentato con Teofilatto.

Scomunicò l'antipoapa Silvestro lll nell'aprile del 1045.

Nel maggio del 1045 la situazione politica romana si aggravò notevolmente al punto da temere per la sua vita, per cui fu indotto ad abdicare e a lasciare l'Urbe dopo aver avuto una ingente somma di denaro dall'arcidiacono riomano Giovanni Graziano, che fu eletto suo successore(papa Gregorio Vl)

Si ritirò nei domini della dinastia nel Lazio, dove visse tra caccie ed intrighi, continuando a farsi chimare papa sebbene fu deposto da un sinodo tenuto a Roma nel 1047 confermato da altro sinodo tenuto nel luglio 1048.

Tentò di riprendere il potere ancora nel 1047, poi rinunciò definitivamente e si ritirò nel monastero di Grotta Ferrata, dove appare ancora in vita in un documento del 18 settembre 1055 in cui dava disposizioni col titolo di "Papa".,
