About Preacher John Rice

A third husband is implied by the reference to Sally Rice as being Sally Madden in Preacher John Rice's will in Madison Co., AL, that was proved on Sep 22, 1834 and recorded Oct 10, 1834 in Will Book No. 6, Page 686. He died in September of 1834.

My first reference to Sally Rice, the oldest daughter of Preacher John Rice--son of Henry Rice, is to her being courted by the infamous outlaw, Willie Harpe, in Knox County, TN where the Harpe's and John Rice lived at that time. The Henry Rice book indicated that the Harpe's family lived only about four miles from the John Rice home. It is said that Sally Rice was a beautiful frail blonde girl less than 20 years of age when Willie Harpe charmed her into marrying him. The father, Preacher John Rice, apparently was also deceived by this smooth-talking neighbor boy, and performed the wedding ceremony on Oct. 5, 1797, according to Knox County TN Marriage Records.

I do not know where Sally Rice was born, but the Year 2000 post, mentioned above, says that John Rice was born in Buncombe Co., NC on April 10, 1760. Her mother was Edith "Eady" (Brown) Rice who was born in SC in 1764. Also, it indicates that at least two of Sally's younger siblings, including Phebe and Lydia, were born in Washington Co., TN, where Washington Co. was a part of NC until 1777. It is interesting to me that Phebe's husband, Lorenzo Evans, is listed as being born in the Pendleton District of SC, where it is known that several of the children of Henry Rice lived later on, including James Rice, my ggg grandfather.

Birth: In 1760 Buncombe Co. did not exist. John would have been born in the far western end of Rowan Co., which became part of the Washington District in 1776 and ultimately Washington Co., TN Apr 10 1760
