Preston Wise, War of 1812, was born about 1785 in Barnwell County, South Carolina. Died about 1868 in west Bulloch County (location now in Candler County), Georgia. Married (1st) Margaret Lee November 16, 1807 in Bulloch County, Georgia. Married (2nd) Mary Ann (Amy) Jones July 28, 1808 in Bulloch County, Georgia. Married (3rd) Nancy Jenkins February 1, 1843 in Bulloch County, Georgia. Married (4th) the widow Mrs. John (Jack) Hendrix (nee: Elmira Jemima Brewton) about 1861 in Bulloch County, Georgia.

Preston was born in South Carolina, the fourth child of William Wise and Sarah Margaret Denmark. Mary Ann was born in North Carolina, her parents are unknown, although she is thought to be a niece of Judge Bridger Jones inasmuch as they named one of their sons Bridger.

Preston is known to have served in the War of 1812, serving as private in Captain John Wisenbaker’s company. He was mustered out in September of 1814, having served his enlistment of six months. He had previously been an Ensign in the 47th District of Bulloch County Georgia Militia in 1808.

Very little is known about this family. Sometime between 1820 and 1830 they moved to Bryan County, Georgia, where they homesteaded. At this time they owned no slaves.

One incident that is mentioned in court records is the murder of their son James. At the age of 25 he was stabbed to death by this Best Man during an altercation on the night of his Bachelor Party in Savannah. Preston administered the estate of his son in 1834.

bout 1834 he and his wife returned to Bulloch County, Georgia. This move from Bryan County probably had something to do with his murdered son James’ homesite and estate in Bulloch.

Preston lived to be about 80 years old and was married four times. It is not known what happened to Mary Ann, as it appears she also lived into her 80s.
