About Prof. John Harmar I

Professor of Greek at Oxford University.

John Harmar, or Harmer (1555?-1613), Greek Professor at Oxford, was born, probably of humble parentage, at Newberry in Berkshire. He matriculated at New College, Oxford as "plebei filius" in 1575, was B. A., and M. A. (in 1582.) He was reckoned a "subtile Aristotelian", was well read in patristic and scholastic theology, and was "a most noted Latinist and Grecian". In 1585 he was appointed Greek Professor at Oxford, was head-master of Winchester 1588-1595, and in 1569 became Warden of St. Mary's College. He was rector of Draxford, Hampshire, and a prebendary of Winchester. In 1604 he was appointed one of the translators of the New Testament and had "a prime hand" in that work. He died Oct. 11, 1613, and was buried in the chapel of New College. He was author of various works. (The above notes were contributed by Reginald M. Glencross, 176 Worple Road, Wimbledon, London, S.D. 19, England).2 (Miles Files) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harmar http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Harmar,_John_%281555%3F-1613%29_%28DN...

He apparently had no surviving children, as he left a very extensive will naming as beneficiaries his wife, his brother Arthur, seven sisters (three of whom, Joane, Ann and Margery, are cited by first *and* married name, the others by husband's/last name only), and various nieces, nephews, etc. There is also an unexplained "Robert Harmar, of New College", to whom he leaves "rever[si]on of my copyhold at Westwood in Somersetshire" - he was referred to at the bottom of the will as "cosen" (cousin, a term also used for other indirect relationships at the time). http://www.jstor.org/stable/4243801?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents
