Minister, Civil War Chaplin and Educator

Pickett was the second son of James Chamberlayne Pickett, a soldier and diplomat from Kentucky. He graduated from Princeton College in 1841. Between 1841-1851 he attended the Sorbonne in France under Professor Ollendolf, studying modern languages and ancient languages. He was ordained as a Minister at A.M. Bethany College in 1847. He attained his Ph.D. from Agriculture and Mechanical College of Lexington, Kentucky. He received an Honorary Ph.D. from Princeton, in 1881.

Between 1854 and 1855 he was elected President of the Female College in Little Rock, Arkansas. He accepted the chair in Rhetoric, English and Anglo-Saxon at Bethany College remaining until the opening of the war in 1861. When “The Troubles” culminated in Kentucky, he considered it his duty to go where he could do the most good so he became a chaplain. He was to join the 2d Kentucky Infantry brigade, known as the “Orphan Brigade.”

Between 1865 and 1868 he served as Professor of Sacred Literature and English at the Agriculture and Mechanical College of Lexington. Between 1868-1869 Presiding Officer of the State Medical College at Lexington, Kentucky. He was also Professor of English, Transylvania University, College of Arts and President of College of Biblical Studies between 1877 and 1889. He was appointed to the Chair of Metaphysics, ancient and modern Languages at Agriculture and Mechanical College of Lexington.

Dr. Pickett was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction of Kentucky, 1879-1883 and was re-elected in 1883-1891.
