~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prest i Seljord i 56 år. I hans tid som prest kom det pålegg om å føre ministerialbok (kirkebok). Dette påbudet fulgte han, og han startet med å skrive en biografi om seg selv. Han skrev om barndommen og ungdommen sin, og på den måten har vi fått vite mye om "hr. Zacharias til Sellejord" Han skriver også at han fikk 2 sønner og 5 døtre med sin første kone, Dorothea, og med Sarka fikk han 4 sønner og 5 døtre, i alt 16 barn. Wille, forfatteren av Sillejords beskrivelse, forteller at alle døtrene, med unntak av ei, ble gift med bondesønner men sønnene vet man ikke så mye om hvor ble av. Noen av barna kan også ha dødd små. Det fortelles at Zacharias var uvanlig sterk. En gang han var på besøk til dattera su skulle han prøve styrekn på ei stpr lang burshelle som enda er i bruk på Vindal. Han løftet alene i den ene enden, mens det i den andre enden var 4 karer! Ved jonsoktider 1654 brant alle husene på prestegarden. Schanke mistet alt han eide. Blant annet brant den boka der han hadde skrevet inn barnedåper, forlovelser, giftemål og inngangskoner. Hadde denne boka blitt berget, hadde kanskje Seljord hatt eldste kirkeboka i landet. Både i 1633 og i 1669 prøvde Schanke å få den inntekten som hans forgjenger hadde hatt. Han lå i sak med bygdefolket om dette, men domen ble lydende at "hr Schanke skal nøies med den Rettighed, som han er tilkaldet" forteller Wille. (Seljordsboken?)
Ingebjørg kasin Sandsdalen har skrevet fire halvdokumentariske romaner om presten Schanke.
Herr Zacharias Jonsson Skanke— Son of Parents Jon and Magdalene comes to Seljord.
Zacharias was born at Innviki church farm. His mother taught him to read. In his ninth year he was sent to Bergen to attend school but became ill and had to return home to his mother. At age 12 he went back but in 1619 he had to escape the plague and went home again. In 1623 he became a student traveling to Copenhagen where he was accepted at the University. But in May of 1625 he was again forced back by the plague.
He traveled all over the country as a teacher and other times as a priest. He became Sokne Priest (parish) in Seljord, Telemark, in 1633 and had this position until he died. He was the priest at Seljord for almost 56 years. He is the first priest in upper Telemark who started a recording system and began it as a long and thorough self-biography.
His first wife died after 10 years of marriage and one year after her death he became engaged to Sarka Jonsdotter.
With his first wife he had 2 boys and 5 daughters; and with the second wife he had 4 boys and 5 daughters, which was a total of 16 children.  There is no information on what became of the sons; but all the daughters except for one got married to farm boys. Some of the children died when they were small. One of his daughters, Maria, got married to Mr. Daniel Wulf, who became Zacharias' chaplain in 1671. She was not yet 16 years old, an early age to be engaged. Perhaps it was a part of the "plan" that the chaplain should get married to the priest's daughter.  As the story goes, Zacharias’ daughters were fun-loving girls, with whom the father was not always pleased.
At midsummer time in 1654 all the houses at the church farm burned and he lost everything he owned. Among the things he lost was the book containing the recording system in which he logged baptisms, engagements, marriages and deaths. If this book had been saved, perhaps Seljord would have had the oldest church book in the country.
During those days it was the church flock that supported the priest and the Lensmaster (official administrator) reduced the income when Zacharias was appointed. He later took it up with the farming area but they told him he had to be satisfied with what had been given him.
The eight mile long Lake Seljord is closely hemmed in by high and steep granite hills. A hamlet at the upper end of the lake also has the name Seljord. One of its most interesting places is the Seljord Church. This church was built about 1150 A.D., a little over a century after the Norwegians accepted Christianity.
There are various spellings for this name and it shifts finally to the most commen spelling, Skanke. There is a Skanke Association of Norway and also one in Sweden and they join together every other year for a Skanke Reunion alternating between Norway and Sweden. The 2003 event was held in Uppsala, Sweden.
Priest in Seljord in 56 years. In his time as pastor there was ordered to lead ministerialbok (parish). This decree followed him, and he started to write a biography about herself. He wrote about his childhood and youth his, and thus we have learned a lot about "hr. Zacharias to Selle Earth" He also writes that he had two sons and five daughters by his first wife, Dorothea, and Sarka he had four sons and five daughters, a total of 16 children. Wille, author of Sille Nature's description says that all her daughters, with the exception of one, married farmer's sons, but sons do not know much about where were from. Some of the children may have died young. It is said that Zacharias was unusually strong. Once he was on a visit to her daughter su he would try styrekn on a long stpr burshelle who still are in use on Vindal. He raised alone on one end, while at the other end was 4 guys! By midsummer 1654 times burned all the houses on the vicarage. Schanke lost everything he owned. Among other things, burned the book in which he had entered christenings, engagements, marriage and entrance wives. Had this book been saved, had perhaps been Seljord oldest church book in the country. Both in 1633 and in 1669 tried Schanke to get the income that his predecessor had. He was in the case with the villagers about this, but the dome was reinforced in that "Mr. Schanke will nøies with the rights that he is tilkaldet" says Wille. (Seljord book?)
Ingebjorg kasin Sandsdalen has written four half-documentary novels about the priest Schanke.
Skanke-foreningen Norge So we belong to the same tribe, with Christense,b. 1634, the eldest daughter of Zacharias, as my ancestor.They just had different mothers. Christense's mother Dorothea Jørgensdtr. died in 1643. Your ancestor Maria Jansdtr. (Groll) (b. 1655(?)), who also had an elder sister named Maria, was the daughter of pastor Zacharias Jonsson Skancke's (1601-89) second wife, Sarka Jansdatter (ca. 1626-1705). Maria was married to Zacharias's chaplain and successor as pastor in Seljord, Daniel Mikkelsson/Michaelsson Wolf (1635-1713). Before they moved into the pastor's residence at Skornes in Sejord, they lived at Hougstoga in Flatdal. I know they had these children: Kristina, Daniel and Katarina. Sarka's father was Jan Giertsen (Groll) (ca. 1589-ca.1643). His parents were Giert Jansen "Hollender" (Groll) (1550-1628, borne in Harlem, Netherlands) and Eufemia (Femia) Søfrensdtr. She may have been of Ansbach ancestry, after Jørgen von Ansbach's daughter Karen Jørgensdtr. Ansbach, who married 1. Søfren/Severin Nielsen i Skien.
