About Pvt Adolphus Christian Rahter, (USA)
His birth location is also reported as Adams County, Pennsylvania, but wherever he was born, he was the son of Christian & Charlotte (Wehmeir) Rahter. In 1860, he was a carriage trimmer living in Littlestown, Adams County, and stood 5' 9" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Oxford Township, Adams County, September 5, 1861, and mustered into federal service at York September 12 as a corporal with Co. I, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, but reduced to ranks before the end of the year. Ruptured while helping build a fort at New Creek, Virginia (today's Keyser, West Virginia), he was discharged by surgeon's certificate January 6, 1863. Ironically, he was discharged the same day and for the same reason as his brother Benjamin, a comrade in the 87th Pennsylvania.
He married Mary Elizabeth Yantis August 29, 1863, and fathered Clay (b. 1864; d. 1864), John Gilbert (b. 1866; d. 1869), and Annie G. (b. 05/15/88 or 85). In 1916, he lived in Baltimore. The family name sometimes was spelled "Rather."* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Dec 24 2022, 17:41:29 UTC
