About Pvt. Alexander Barnett Ash

Alexander Ash served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in Company B, 11th Missouri Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on August 7, 1862 in Keetsville (now Washburn), Missouri. His regiment originally formed as the 8th Missouri Infantry Regiment, but was renamed as the 11th Regiment in order to avoid confusion with Col. Mitchell's 8th Missouri Infantry. It was also called the 2nd Regiment.

"11th Infantry Regiment [also called 2nd Regiment], formerly Burns' 8th Regiment, was organized during the winter of 1863-1864. The unit served in Parson's and S.P. Burns' Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and fought in Arkansas and Louisiana. It lost 5 killed and 44 wounded at Pleasant Hill and 2 killed and 15 wounded at Jenkins' Ferry. Early in 1865 it disbanded. The field officers were Colonel Simon P. Burns, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas H. Murray, and Major James Phillips."

This unit was first organized by Col. DeWitt C. Hunter as the 8th Missouri Infantry but later reorganized and redesignated to prevent its confusion with Mitchell's 8th Missouri Infantry (commanded by Col. Charles S. Mitchell). Burns'/Hunter's original regiment (designated as the 8th Missouri Infantry) saw action at the Battle of Helena and during Shelby's Missouri/Arkansas raid of Sept/Oct. 1863. As designated the 11th Missouri Infantry, this regiment engaged the Federals during the Red River Campaign, Battles of Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry among others."
