Civil War Veteran

In Memoriam. (Portales Valley News) To the memory of Comrade C. F. Wharton, born Oct 30, 1840, and died March 4, 1908 at his home near Floyd, Roosevelt Co. NM. As a citizen, he was loyal, ever at his post, in the forefront, battling for his country's good and the upbuilding of society. As a christian, he passed to the other shore in the full assurance of an eternal rest. As a soldier, he was always at his post. His name was among the first few in the organization of Camp Bedford Forrest No 1606, United Confederate Veterans, at Portales, quite four years ago. He was always the first to respond to any call made by his company and was really loved by his comrades and associates. Wharton volunteered in the Conf. Army and served in Forrest's command from the beginning to the close of the Civil War, having been in the battles of Shiloh, Corrinth and many others, faithfully battling for his country and, for meritorious service, was promoted to the captaincy of his company. He was a member of Tom Green Camp No 169 up to 1903. The sympathy of our camp is hereby extended to the bereaved wife and children of our comrade, and a blank page in our roll book is dedicated to his memory as an everlasting momento for the loss we have sustained.
