During the Civil War, William M. Wharton enlisted in "I" Co., 154th Sr. Tennessee Regiment, along with three of his brothers. William was killed at the Battle of Murphreesboro, or Stone's River, in Tennessee. He is one of the few confederate dead to have a marked grave in the city cemetery.
