OBITUARY: "C.W. Burright, 68 years old, was injured Friday at Independence(Government Works in the River below the City) when he was struck by a grubbing machine. He died within the hour. He leaves a wife and 13 children. He had lived in Independence, OR, five years. Previously came from Sodaville, Linn, OR where they resided since 1890. They came out to Oregon from their homestead in Victoria Springs, Custer County, Neb in 1890. Funeral Services were held under the auspices of the G.A.R. and W.R.C., conducted by Dr. Dunsmore, of Calvary Presbyterian Church."
Union Civil War veteran. Served 14th Iowa Company G, Infantry. Rank Principal Musician. Promoted to Full Principal Musician on 01 September 1862. Mustered out at Davenport, IA on 16 November 1864.
The 14th Iowa fought in the western theater under the command of Generals Grant and Rosecrans. They took part in the capture of Fort Donelson and fought in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth among others. The regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 59 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 138 Enlisted men by disease. Total 203. (Geneal Rosencrance is a distant relative of Cornelius' wife, Sarah... her grandmother, Mahala Snider, on her fathers side of family is a Rosencrance.)
