About Pvt. David Pickle (CSA)

David Pickle served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in Company L "Gholson's Rebels," 43rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment.

He enlisted on April 30, 1862 at Athens, MS and with his regiment joined the Army of the West and took part in the Battle of Luka and the Second Battle of Corinth. After these battles, the 43rd Mississippi was placed in Evan's Brigade and sent to North Carolina to repulse a Union raid in the Battle of Kinston. In the summer of 1863, Evans' Brigade was assigned to General Joseph E. Johnston's army during the Vicksburg Campaign, where the 43rd Mississippi took part in the Battle of Snyder's Bluff, the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the Battle of Big Black River Bridge, culminating in the Confederate surrender at the Siege of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863.

David Pickle was among the about 30,000 Confederates that surrendered after the siege and were subsequently paroled. David Pickle was paroled on July 4, 1863 and furloughed for 30 days from July 23, 1863. David Pickle never reported back to camp at the expiration of his furlough and was listed as absent without leave.
