Civil War Union Army Chaplain. The son of War of 1812 New York Militia General Martin Heermance, he graduated from Rutgers University in 1834. He was residing in Macon, Michigan when the Civil war erupted, and he and his young son Isaac enlisted in the 4th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. Both mustered in as Privates in Company E on August 28, 1862, Isaac would died of disease in New York City, New York on June 21, 1864. Meanwhile, Heermance the elder served until he was discharged due to disability at Nashville, Tennessee on April 7, 1863.
He later was commissioned Chaplain of the 128th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 17, 1864.
He was a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church.
