John Atchison was born in Illinois around the year 1923. The Atchsons moved to St. Louis, Missouri in the 1920s; father Earl worked as a mine laborer, while Ethel Atchison helped support her family by sewing in a coat making factory.

John Atchison enlisted in the Marine Corps from Chicago on August 14, 1940. Two months later, he boarded the USS Arizona and sailed for his first assignment at the Marine Barracks, Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Atchison served with Guard Company #1 at Puget Sound until December 3, 1940. He was reassigned to the Marine detachment aboard the Arizona.

Private Atchison served aboard the Arizona from January to December, 1941.

John Atchison was killed in action when the Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor.
